NYC: 'BROTHERS IN JAZZ' - HIGHLIGHTS IN JAZZ FINAL SHOW OF THE SEASON

Jack Kleinsinger's Highlights In Jazz, New York's longest running jazz concert series, concludes it's 42nd Season with "Brothers In Jazz starring the Heath Brothers (Jimmy Heath and Albert "Tootie" Heath) and Peter Anderson & Will Anderson performing Music of the Dorsey Brothers at THE TRIBECA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (199 Chambers Street, NYC - 212-220-1460) on Thursday, May 8th at 8:00 pm. The show also will feature Wycliffe Gordon, plus a surprise special guest. Now in their fifth decade together, The Heath Brothers, remains one of the most enduring groups performing in jazz history. First assembled in 1975, the band, which originally featured tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, bassist Percy Heath and drummer/percussionist Albert "Tootie" Heath (along with pianist Stanley Cowell) garnered international recognition with their debut Strata East recording Marching On. Sharing the bill with the Heath Brothers will be Peter and Will Anderson (Performing The Music of the Dorsey Brothers), making their third Highlights In Jazz appearance. The remarkable young siblings, have received widespread praise for their Off Broadway jazz productions Artie Shaw at 100, The Fabulous Dorseys and Le Jazz Hot. They will reprise their swinging renditions of compositions by big band giants Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey with an exciting ensemble featuring Wynton Marsalis Sextet and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra alumnus, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, who will be performing for the dedicated Highlights crowd for the fifteenth time. Tickets are $45.

NYC: BIRDLAND PRESENTS THE MARIA SCHNEIDER ORCHESTRA

The famed Maria Schneider Orchestra will perform atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Thursday through Saturday, May 8th through 10th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Maria Schneider is an American composer and big-bandleader. Her 2004 album Concert in the Garden won a GRAMMY for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. Her 2007 composition, Cerulean Skies won a GRAMMY for Best Instrumental Composition. In 2013, Schneider released an album Winter Morning Walks featuring soprano Dawn Upshaw, The Saint Paul and Australian Chamber Orchestras, bassist, Jay Anderson, pianist, Frank Kimbrough, and multi-instrumentalist, Scott Robinson. In 2014 it won three GRAMMY Awards: Best Classical Contemporary Composition for the work Winter Morning Walks written to poetry by US Poet-Laureate, Pulitzer Prize Winner, Ted Kooser. Dawn Upshaw received a GRAMMY for her vocal performance on the same recording, and producer, David Frost, and engineers, Tim Martyn and Brian Losch all received GRAMMYs for Best Engineered Album, Classical. The album fan-funded through ArtistShare is surely one of the first, if not the first album by major American orchestras to be fan-funded. There is a $35 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: EDDIE PALMIERI LATIN JAZZ BAND WITH SPECIAL GUESTS

Eddie Palmieri, known for his charismatic power and bold innovative drive, will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, May 6th through 11th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The Band: Eddie Palmieri, piano; Anthony Carrillo, percussion; Luques Curtis, bass; Camilo Molina, percussion; Vicente "Little Johnny" Rivero, percussion. Special guests: Alfredo de la Fe, violin; Donald Harrison, sax; Joe Locke, vibes; Ronnie Cuber, baritone sax. Palmieri has a musical career that spans over 50 years as a bandleader of Salsa and Latin Jazz orchestras. With a discography that includes 36 titles, Mr. Palmieri has been awarded Nine Grammy Awards. Born in Spanish Harlem in 1936, Eddie began piano studies at an early age, as did his celebrated older brother, the late Salsa legend and pianist, Charlie Palmieri. For Latin New Yorkers of Eddie's generation, music was a vehicle out of El Barrio. At age 11, he auditioned at Weil Recital Hall, which is next door to Carnegie Hall, a venue as far from the Bronx as he could imagine. Possessed by a desire to play the drums, Palmieri joined his uncle's orchestra at age 13, where he played timbales. Eddie Palmieri, a restless, yet instinctive artist, embraces the future of his music by unapologetically blazing a distinctive musical path to the delight of fans across the globe. A true powerhouse of brilliance, known for his astute arranging skills and historic compositions, Mr. Palmieri has shown that time is infinite with respect to his repertoire as he continues to thrill audiences throughout the world with his legendary style. There is a $35-$45 cover.

NYC: THE JUILLIARD JAZZ ORCHESTRA CELEBRATING DUKE ELLINGTON & GERALD WILSON

The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra celebrates Duke Ellington & Gerald Wilson on Wednesday through Sunday, May 7th through May 11th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595). The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since its founding, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy at Dizzy's. The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra features some of the world's most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians. These gifted young musicians are proof of jazz's bright future, and they honor two essential parts of its living legacy in this celebration of Duke Ellington and Gerald Wilson.
