NYC: ERIC YVES GARCIA AT BEMELMAN'S BAR
Eric Yves Garcia has been invited back again to perform at BEMELMAN'S BAR at the CARLYLE (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-570-7189) on Sundays, February 16th & 23rd at 9:00 pm. You're invited to enjoy music, stories and laughs well into the evening as Mr. Garcia burns up the keys, with Ritt Henn on Bass and Tony Romano on Guitar. There is a $15 cover at the bar, $25 at tables.
NYC: THE BIRDLAND JAZZ PARTY FEATURING NANCY HARMS
It's Sunday, and every week BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-30800 presents The Birdland Jazz Party, and on Sunday, February 16th at 6:00 pm they are featuring Nancy Harms. Born and raised in Minnesota, Harms has relocated to New York City, where she made her jazz club debut in 2010 to a packed house in the Village's The Bar Next Door. After returning to the USA from a highly-successful appearance at The Sortland Jazz Festival in Norway, Nancy later appeared at The Rockwood Music Hall in NYC, Bob Egan's New Hope in New Hope, PA., and a series of performances with trombone legend Wycliffe Gordon, with whom she recently appeared at New York City's Kitano. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS
Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: VALENTINE'S WEEK WITH RACHELLE FERRELL
Celebrate Valentine's Week atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, February 13th through 16th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm with vocalist Rachelle Ferrell. While Ferrell has a established fan base in the contemporary jazz scene, her unique visibility on the pop/urban contemporary scene has boosted her audience's interest in her overall breadth of work. She has made her mark as a crossover artist who's equally at home with urban contemporary pop, gospel, classical music and jazz. Ferrell has sung backup for Lou Rawls, Patti LaBelle, Vanessa Williams and George Duke to name a few. Her prolific songwriting abilities and ability to accompany herself on piano seem only to further her natural talent as a vocalist. There is a $30-$45 cover.
NYC: BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO AT THE IRIDIUM
Buckwheat Zydeco will perform at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Saturday & Sunday, February 15th & 16th with shows at 8:30 & 10:30 pm. Zydeco has performed with a large number of famous musicians from Eric Clapton (with whom Buckwheat also recorded) and U2 to The Boston Pops. The band performed at the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics to a worldwide audience of three billion people. Buckwheat performed for President Clinton twice, celebrating both of his inaugurations. The band has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, CNN, The Today Show, MTV, NBC News, CBS Morning News, National Public Radio's Weekend Edition. Buckwheat's especially powerful and haunting version of the classic "Cryin' in the Streets" appears on the benefit album for Hurricane Katrina recovery, Our New Orleans: A Benefit Album for the Gulf Coast. Buckwheat's version of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" appeared on 2011's Alligator Records 40th Anniversary Collection. It originally appeared on the 2009 Buckwheat Zydeco album "Lay Your Burden Down". There is a $30 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
NYC: TIERNEY SUTTON BAND AT DIZZY'S
Five-time GRAMMY Award nominee Tierney Sutton and band perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, February 13th through 16th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Sutton is often described as a "singer's singer," but just as often (and more fittingly), she is described as a "musician's singer," who uses her voice like an instrument. The members of the Tierney Sutton Band, now widely respected as experienced masters of their craft, have been recording and touring together for over 20 years. Known for a democratic creative approach, the band recently earned a 2011 GRAMMY Award nomination for its collective group arranging. Their fearless song selection features timeless jazz standards, selections from musical theater, traditional American folk music, and the compositions of well-known and artistically respected artists like Joni Mitchell.There is a $40-$45 cover.
