BOSTON: DANILO PEREZ: PANAMA 500 CD RELEASE
Danilo Perez will celebrate the release of his new CD 'Panama 500' at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Saturday, February 15th at 8:00 & 10:00 pm & Sunday, February 16th at 4:00 & 7:00 pm. The show features Ben Street, Adam Cruz, Roman Diaz and Alex Hargreaves. Panama 500 is Perez's most ambitious project to date, the furthest evolution yet of what the pianist/composer calls "three-dimensional music." His blend of influences makes him the ideal musical chronicler of his country's history: already a land bridge between the Americas with a vibrant indigenous culture, Panama also began to absorb European culture into its own following Balboa's arrival. Perez similarly weaves together jazz and Pan-American folkloric traditions with influences from European classical music. Danilo Perez is a musician, philanthropist, and educator. A Grammy award winner Danilo Perez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. He is also the UNESCO Artist for Peace and the director and founder of the Panama Jazz Festival. Call for cover/minimum information.
D.C.: MARION MEADOWS AT BLUES ALLEY
Saxophonist Marion Meadows performs at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Saturday & Sunday, February 15th & 16th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Marion is hiding something. Like a deft sleight-of-hand artist, there's always something up his sleeve - something he's not showing you outright - that ultimately reveals itself when the music starts. Somewhere in those mysterious spaces between the notes - at the convergence of melody, harmony and rhythm - the simple treasures and universal truths are laid bare for those whose ears and minds and hearts are open to discover them. Call for cover/minimum information.
D.C.: STEPHAN CRUMP'S ROSETTA TRIO AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS
Stephan Crump's Rosetta Trio will perform at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS(2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-08000 on Sunday, February 16th at 7:00 pm. Crump brought together Rosetta Trio for the first time in 2005 to record an album of pieces written in the aftermath of 9/11. That "engaging and sublime meeting" of Crump on acoustic bass with guitarists Liberty Ellman and Jamie Fox, produced the album Rosetta which was released in 2006 and greeted enthusiastically by fans, radio and the press. Reclamation is much more than a follow-up effort to its ecstatically-received predecessor, though it was the earlier album that gave the trio its name and its mission: to inhabit the dynamic and rhythmic flexibility of a drumless ensemble and embrace its challenges and expanded responsibilities; to reject restrictions of genre; to explore different territories of feel, texture, color; to groove. Here the trio further develops its intimate synergy and reveals its maturity after having toured and recorded in numerous contexts since those first sessions. There is a $15 cover.
SAN FRANCISCO: PAULA WEST IN EXTENDED RUN AT YOSHI'S
San Francisco based jazz vocalist Paula West will perform at FEINSTEIN'S AT THE NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 866-663-1063) in a 4-week engagement opening on Thursday, February 13th, with shows running Thursday through Sunday, through March 9th. See website for showtimes. Known for her rich, powerful contralto voice, West will present an all-new show featuring an eclectic range of songs - from memorable jazz standards by Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart, to contemporary American classics by Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Accompanied by her four-piece band, West will take San Francisco audiences on a musical journey through the ages. Born into a Marine Corps family in San Diego, California, Paula West was initially exposed to classical music. It wasn't until college that West began listening to jazz singers such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn. After college, West moved to San Francisco, unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. Buying old records from thrift shops, she studied them and then began singing classes. As she became more secure in her talent, she ventured into jam sessions, places where an open mike gave her a chance to perform before an audience. It was at one of these sessions that she met a pianist who would join her in the climb to her own musical identity and her musical success. His name was Ken Muir, and he continues as her accompanist today. West went on to study with Faith Winthrop, developing her unique tone and delivery. She learned how to sustain a note without a vibrato, which is now almost a Paula West trademark. Tickets are $35-$50 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.
