NYC: BIRDLAND PRESENTS "REFLECTIONS OF MONK"
An all-star band will present "Reflections of Monk" at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, February 18th through 22nd with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Band members include Tom Harrell (trumpet), Greg Osby (alto sax), Melissa Aldana (tenor sax, 2/21-22), Aaron Goldberg (piano), Ben Allison (bass) and Matt Wilson (drums). Due in part to his clever use of unorthodox harmonies and angular melodic and rhythmic twists, the iconoclastic jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk made indelible contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "Epistrophy," "'Round Midnight," "Blue Monk," "Straight, No Chaser," "Well, You Needn't" and many more. (It's widely believed that Monk is the second-most recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington). For "Reflections of Monk," a diverse collection of composer/performers, influenced by - if not typically associated with - Monk's music, ably re-interpret the canon. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: PATRICIA BARBER AT THE BLUE NOTE
Patricia Barber will perform atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, February 21st through 23rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. From her early days leading a jazz trio in small Chicago nightclubs, Patricia Barber has drawn extravagant accolades. The praise came at first from local writers, impressed by her unique arrangements and coolly composed piano improvisations. As she added vocals to her repertoire, the praise poured in from national reviewers intoxicated by her recordings. And when (after years of international touring) she began to focus on her own compositions, kudos arrived from new fans, besotted by her lapidary lyrics and her often indelible imagery. Since Barber doesn't consider herself a poet - and since she didn't want to be a jazz pianist in the first place - you'd have to say things turned out pretty well. There is a $20-$30 cover.
NYC: CASEY ABRAMS AT THE IRIDIUM
21-year-old singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and American Idol finalist Casey Abrams performs at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Thursday through Saturday, February 20th through 22nd with shows at 8:30 & 10:30 pm. Casey proves he is here to stay with his self-titled debut album on Concord Records. Casey Abrams' story is that of a born natural, but it's also the story of a person who studied diligently and worked extremely hard, striving toward his dream of a life in music. He was born in Austin, Texas to professionally accomplished, extraordinarily creative parents. Casey's mother, Pamela Pierce, a screenwriter and teacher, also plays piano and sings. His father, Ira Abrams currently teaches at Idyllwild Arts Academy, the distinguished private school in the mountains above Palm Springs, California that proved instrumental in shaping Casey's musical life.
