NYC: THE WBGO JAZZ SERIES WITH ANAT COHEN & CHORO AVENTUROSO AT 54 BELOW
The 54 Below WBGO Jazz Series continues, featuring weekly Tuesday evening shows by jazz artists. Just around the corner from Swing Street, these seasoned jazz performers come to 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) to play and sing the night away in grand style. Whether you're a long time jazz buff or new to the genre, this series, sponsored by the country's premier jazz radio station, promises a truly classic only-in-New York experience. On Tuesday through Sunday, August 20th through 25th (showtines vary nightly, see website), the phenomenal young Israeli clarinetist and saxophonist, Anat Cohen, celebrated in Brazil as a virtuoso player of "choro" music, celebrates the New York Premiere of her "Choro Aventuroso" band. Choro is improvisational music dating from the early part of the 20th Century. Just like jazz, blues, and ragtime, "choro" melds formalized structures seamlessly with cultural elements from all over the world. In "Choro Aventuroso" Anat Cohen will be collaborating with contemporary Brazilian and American musicians to create a passionate, swinging, and always colorful and compelling blend of jazz, samba, classic chorinhos and constant surprise. There is a $25-$35 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
