Her debut album, Never Never Land (2000), remained on the Billboard Jazz chart for over a year and was voted Best Debut Recording by the members of the Jazz Journalists Association. Her second release, Come Dream with Me (2001), came just a year later and landed atop the Billboard Jazz charts, while In the Sun, her 2002 release, earned a Grammy nomination for Vince Mendoza in the Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals category. NYC: TOM PRINCIPATO BAND: A TRIBUTE TO ROBERT JOHNSON

The NYC: Tom Principato Band will present a Tribute to Robert Johnson at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Wednesday, November 20th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 - August 16, 1938) was an American blues singer and musician. His landmark recordings from 1936-37 display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that has influenced later generations of musicians. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend, including the Faustian myth that he sold his soul at a crossroads to achieve success. As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson had little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime. It was only after the reissue of his recordings in 1961 on the LP King of the Delta Blues Singers that his work reached a wider audience. Johnson is now recognized as a master of the blues, particularly of the Mississippi Delta blues style. He is credited by many rock musicians as an important influence; Eric Clapton has called Johnson "the most important blues singer that ever lived." Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an "Early Influence" in their first induction ceremony in 1986. In 2003, David Fricke ranked Johnson fifth in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. After 38+ years and a career that boasts 17 albums, 25 "Wammie" awards in numerous categories from the Washington, DC Music Assoc. and over 5,000 gigs which includes over 50 tours of Europe, Tom Principato has been taking his Indie infused eclectic roots mixture of Rock, Funk, Blues and Latin Sounds all over the World - all along the way leaving audiences wowed and slack jawed with his virtuoso talent. There is a $25 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

NYC: LAVAY SMITH SINGS COUNT BASIE AT DIZZY'S

Lavay Smith sings the music of Count Basie at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Tuesday & Wednesday, November 19th & 20th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Lavay Smith is a classic jazz and blues singer, with a style reminiscent of greats like Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith, Little Esther Phillips, and Billie Holiday. Due to her vintage flair and musicality, she has become internationally known as the Queen of Classic Jazz and Blues, and this California native has performed in Japan, Mexico, Finland, Canada, and 43 states in the U.S. Though Smith encapsulates the vibe of singers past, her songs speak timelessly to women's strength and independence, which she exemplifies through her role as owner of Fat Note Records. Lavay Smith is a sultry, expressive musician whose fiery presence is sure to light up the stage. There is a $35 cover.
