N.Y. STATE: JERRY COSTANZO & HIS TRIO AT DON LORENZO'S

Jerry Costanzo & His Trio performs atDON LORENZO'S RESTAURANT & LOUNGE (242 Glen Cove Avenue, Glen Cove, NY - 516-801-3667), every Wednesday from 7:00 to 10:30 pm. Jerry and the trio (Tim Regusis: piano, John Ray: bass, Ian Petillo: drums) will be playing Jazz, Swing and the songs of Sinatra and the great crooners. Plus special guest musicians and singers will be appearing each week. Dedicated to the preservation of "The Great American Song Book" Jerry Costanzo is considered one of the best and busiest singer/bandleaders on the scene today.

BOSTON: BACA OPEN MIC AT FIRST PARISH CHURCH
FEATURED CABARET ORGANIZATION EVENT

The next BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists) OPEN MIC will be held on Wednesday, August 28th at FIRST PARISH CHURCH (35 Church Street, Watertown Square, MA) from 7:15 to 10:30 pm (sign-up begins at 7:00 pm). This month the show is hosted by Phil Kassel, Steve Heck is accompanist. Kathleen Kolman will speak on vocal health. Singers should prepare up to two songs with music charts in the correct key. There is a $10 cover for BACA members, $13 for non-members.

BOSTON: PIANIST YOKO MIWA AT SCULLERS

Renowned pianist and JVC Victor Entertainment Recording Artist, Yoko Miwa will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111 - ) on Wednesday, November 20th at 8:00 pm. In June, the Yoko Miwa Trio was voted Best Jazz Act by the Boston Phoenix in the 2012 Best Music Poll. In July, her trio released their major label debut CD in Japan titled Act Naturally on the JVC Victor Entertainment label. Dinner/Show: $60 Show only: $20.

BOSTON: JOSE JAMES CD RELEASE: NO BEGINNING NO END

Jose James will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, November 20th at 7:30 pm. He is joined on stage by Kris Bowers - keys, Solomon Dorsey - bass, Richard Spaven - drums, and Takuya Kuroda - trumpet. Jose has established himself as a trailblazer for his intoxicating blend of jazz, hip-hop, R&B and electronica from his previous three albums. His 2008 debut The Dreamer and its 2010 follow-up, BlackMagic - both produced by the world-renowned DJ Gilles Peterson - transformed the Minneapolis-born, New York-based singer into an underground sensation in both the modern jazz and DJ culture scenes. No Beginning No End' is a seamless musical experience that moves between different styles with remarkable fluidity, bound together by James' transcendent voice. It marks a new chapter in the artistic journey of the 33-year-old singer/songwriter. Conceived, recorded and produced independently without any recording contract, the album is his most personal statement yet. There is a $28 cover.

TORONTO: BRYN ROBERTS / SEAMUS BLAKE QUARTET

The Bryn Roberts / Seamus Blake Quartet will perform atTHE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday & Wednesday, November 19th & 20th at 8:00 pm. The quartet, from NYC, features two players of note that formerly made Canada their home. Since moving to New York City, Winnipeg-born pianist/ keyboardist/ composer Bryn Roberts has appeared with many of the city's top jazz musicians, including Chris Cheek, Chris Potter, Lage Lund and Victor Lewis, to name a few. In recent years, Bryn has turned his talents to the world of rock, pop, R & B and folk music as well, performing with Juno award winning artist Serena Ryder (Atlantic Records), and touring widely with the acclaimed folk-pop singer Dar Williams (Razor and Tie Records). Born in England and raised in Vancouver, NYC-based tenor saxophonist/ composer Seamus Blake is a winner of several awards including the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition (2002). As the winner, he performed with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock; he has also worked with John Scofield, Victor Lewis and many others, and is recognized as one of the finest exponents of contemporary jazz. Also in the quartet are Matt Penman - bass and Jochen Rueckert - drums. There is a $15 cover.

TORONTO: JAZZ BISTRO YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: PATRICK HEWAN

Patrick Hewan will be performing at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday through Saturday, November 19th through 23rd at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist Series. Hewan is a rising star in the Toronto Jazz scene who's energetic virtuosic playing captivates and moves his audiences. He draws on the vast vocabulary of the legendary jazz pianists who came before him and adds his own spirit and passion to create a unique sound and style. Drawing heavily on influences such as: Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Hiromi Uehara, Oscar Peterson, and Phineas Newborn while studying under the tutelage of legendary pianists such as Mark Eisenman, Brian Dickesnon, Richard Whiteman, Robi Botos, and Hilario Duran it's no secret where Patrick developed his unique, high-octane style that still clearly adheres to the art forms tradition. No cover charge.

Molly Ringwald's celebrates the release of her Concord Records debut CD, 'Except Sometimes', at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday & Wednesday, November 19th & 20th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The CD had been a lifetime in the making. Long before she became known as a Golden Globe-nominated actress, Ringwald was singing. She started performing with her pianist father's jazz band when she was three and she has never stopped. Talk with Ringwald for even a short amount of time and it's clear her grasp of jazz and its history comes from a lifelong study of the form and the great singers who inspired her.
