NYC: THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER AT THE BLUE NOTE
The Manhattan Transfer will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, November 14th through 17th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The is one of the most important and innovative vocal groups in the history of popular music. They easily move between the musical worlds of pop, jazz, and Brazilian music. The Manhattan Transfer is Tim Hauser, Cheryl Bentyne, Alan Paul and Janis Siegel. The group is currently working on a special project called The Vaults to commemorate its 40 years of incredible vocal jazz. There is a $40-$65 cover.
NYC: THE BIRDLAND JAZZ PARTY FEATURING RACHEL ECKROTH
Rachel Eckroth will be featured at the Birdland Jazz Party on Sunday, November 17th at 6:00 pm atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080). Music writers often find themselves stumped as to quantify an artist's work, seemingly defaulting to the "eclectic trump card" way too often. As to the works of jazz pianist, singer and songwriter, Rachel Eckroth • eclectic is most apropos, however, Rachel's music is obvious - from its' roots and influence, to its' gracefully bold uniqueness. Born and raised in the greater Phoenix (AZ) area, Rachel was rooted in a musical family - both of her parents are musicians as is her brother, Michael (pianist). By the time Rachel was in highschool, she was a fixture in the Phoenix jazz scene under the watchful eye of former Basie Band vocalist, Dennis Rowland. Rachel attended the University of Las Vegas, Nevada and upon graduating, remained in Las Vegas backing numerous regional and national acts. Rachel headed east and obtained an MFA in jazz performance from Rutgers University in 2005, her subsequent resumE included national and international touring experience along with a return home to Arizona for a steady gig with an international recording artist based in the Phoenix. Concurrently, Rachel released her first solo album, "Mind", a jazz trio record met with critical acclaim nationally. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS
Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: JIM WEIDER WITH AMY HELM & THE BIG STRING ORCHESTRA
Jim Weider with Amy Helm & The Big String Orchestra will present 'A Night Of Guitar Ballads: Songs By The Band, Dylan & More' at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Sunday, November 17th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. It will be a special instrumental evening from beautiful original atmospheric to powerful melodic Rock and R&B Ballads & Songs. The Big String Orchestra features Jim Weider - Guitar (THE BAND, Levon Helm); Rodney Holmes - drums (Santana & Brecker Bros); Sid Mcginnis - guitar (David Letterman Band); Steve Lucas - bass (Bruce Cockburn); Clifford Carter - keyboards (James Taylor); and Akua Dixon - cello (Ray Charles, Mary J Blige) with Special Guest Amy Helm - vocals. There is a $35 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
