NYC: THE CLEVELAND WATKISS QUARTET AT DIZZY'S TONIGHT
The Cleveland Watkiss Quartet (Cleveland Watkiss, Voice; Jonathan Gee, Piano; Larry Bartley, Acoustic Bass; Ernesto Simpson, Drums) will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 - ) on Wednesday, June 26th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Hailed as the best jazz singer in Britain (Evening Standard), this virtuoso vocalist/ actor/ composer/ educator is one of jazz's most versatile voices. Winner of the London Awards "Best Vocalist" and a three-time Wire/Guardian Award winner, Cleveland Watkiss has had a wonderfully eclectic career. He has collaborated with Bob Dylan, Wynton Marsalis, The Who, Cassandra Wilson, Bjork, Art Blakey, Stevie Wonder, and more. Dubbed the "Sonny Rollins of the human voice" by Time Out, Watkiss can take on the frontman role and improvise like a variety of instruments, but also incorporates his vocals with the rhythm section in a manner that complements and extends the musical dimensions of a conventional jazz quartet. Fans of jazz vocals looking for something a little unusual shouldn't miss this one. Call for cover/minimum information.
