NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ BRUNCH: BRAD SHEPIK & HIS NYU JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Guitarist Brad Shepik and his NYU Jazz Ensemble perform the "Music of Monk, Coltrane, Konitz, Rivers, Strayhorn and beyond..." at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Sunday, February 22nd with shows at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. In addition to performing with his own groups, The Brad Shepik Trio, The Brad Shepik Quartet and Human Activity Suite, across Europe and North America, Brad Shepik has performed and/or recorded with Paul Motian, Joey Baron, Bob Brookmeyer, Carla Bley, Charlie Haden, Dave Douglas as well as oud/violin virtuoso Simon Shaheen, and Bulgarian saxophone legend Yuri Yunakov. Shepik has been a member of a wide variety of groups including Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio, Matt Darriau's Paradox Trio, Pachora w/Chris Speed, Jim Black and Skuli Sverrisson, and BABKAS. He has also performed with Carla Bley's Escalator Over the Hill, Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra and toured and recorded with Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band for 5 years. Concurrently, the guitarist extended his interest in world music idioms by performing and recording in such groups as Yuri Yunakov's Bulgarian Wedding Band and Simon Shaheen's Quantara. Shepik's first two records as a leader, The Loan and The Well, were praised for their marriage of world music styles and jazz. There is a $29.50 cover. **Price includes brunch, music and a drink.**
NYC: SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH WITH GABRIELLE STRAVELLI
Bistro Award winning vocalist, Gabrielle Stravelli, returns with her Sunday Jazz Brunch on January 18th at LE PESCADEUX (90 Thompson Street, NYC - 212-966-0021), a French restaurant in the heart of Soho. They will play three sets from 12:30 to 4:00 pm. She will be joined by Saul Rubin on guitar and Pat O'Leary on bass in this charming boite that offers a great, well-priced menu and cozy atmosphere. Award-winning vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following through her unique take on material from the new American songbook as well as classic standards by artists as varied as Pink Floyd and Duke Ellington, Dolly Parton and Johnny Mercer. A trained actor, Gabrielle has a soulful sensitivity for the story in the lyric. Gabrielle has performed on stages from Amsterdam to New York including Carnegie Hall, Iridium Jazz Club, Birdland, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Reservations are strongly suggested. NYC: SUNDAY OPEN MIC AT THE MET - NOON TO 2:30 PM
Sunday Open Mic comes to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on the 2nd & 4th Sundays each month from 12:00 noon to 2:30 pm (signup ay 11:30 am). Presented and hosted by Susan Winter and Deb Berman, the "OPEN MIC AT THE MET" is not your average Open Mic since it will be presented on the iconic stage, with amazing acoustics, high-end equipment, and experienced sound engineer to help create a concert-like experience in Metropolitan Room's friendly, warm environment. Each Open Mic offers different pianists to accompany your performance. There is a $15 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
TORONTO: SUNDAY BRUNCH WITH ELI PASIC
Pianist, composer/ lyricist/ librettist/ comic Eli Pasic will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO(251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sundays in February from 12-noon to 3:00 pm as part of the clubs Sunday Jazz Brunch series. Pasic is a conduit to the old school world of jazz and musical comedy. Prior to his studies at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Eli was mentored by Broadway orchestrator and conductor Larry Blank and has been a part of over a dozen stage musicals as a musician and author. He's committed to reviving the classic style of golden era entertainment in his writing and playing, with songs by Cole Porter, the Gershwins and Rodgers and Hart, among others, in a unique, inimitable fashion. There is a $5 cover.
