NYC: ROTEM SIVAN & PETER BERNSTEIN DUO AT BIRDLAND
The Rotem Sivan & Peter Bernstein Duo will appear at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Thursday, February 26th at 6:00 pm. Rotem Sivan is a well-praised and fascinating voice in the New York jazz scene. Born in Haifa, Israel, Sivan's early attraction to guitar and jazz started at a very early age. He was exposed and influenced by a variety of music genres including Baroque composers, classic rock, Middle-Eastern and Indian music. His early influences were Led Zeppelin, J.S. Bach, Jimi Hendrix, Pat Metheny, Leonard Cohen, John Schofield, Erik Satie, W.A. Mozart, Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal and Brad Mehldau. Sivan is a graduate of Tel-Aviv University Music Academy, where he completed his B.A. with honors in Classical Composition. In 2008, Sivan moved to New York City and continued his music education at The New School earning his B.F.A degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music, with honors. Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein (b. 1967, New York City) has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in over 80 recordings and numerous festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has released nine albums and a DVD, Live at Smoke. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: STEPS AHEAD CELEBRATES 35TH ANNIVERSERY
In the late 1970s, pioneering vibraphonist Mike Mainieri founded the jazz fusion group Steps Ahead in order to delve into contemporary sounds while maintaining experimental energy and compositional integrity. Steps Ahead (Mike Mainieri - vibes; Eliane Elias - piano; Peter Erskine - drums; Marc Johnson - bass; and George Garzone - saxophones) achieved global acclaim and became a launching pad for young talent and new musical ideas. They will appear at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) to celebrate their 35th Anniversary with a week of performances, Tuesday through Saturday, February 24th through 28th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. In addition to the 35th Anniversary edition, Steps "alumni" include saxophonists Michael Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Bob Berg, and Bill Evans; Pianists Don Grolnick, Kenny Kirkland, Rachel Z, and Joey Calderazzo; Guitarists Mike Stern, Steve Khan, Chuck Loeb, and Hiram Bullock; Bassists Eddie Gomez, Tom Kennedy, Daryl Jones, and Richard Bona; Drummers: Steve Gadd, Steve Smith, Billy Kilson, and Jeff 'Tain' Watts; Vocalists Dianne Reeves, Bobby McFerrin, and Richard Bona. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: JIMMY HEATH BIG BAND AT THE BLUE NOTE
The Jimmy Heath Big Band will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, February 26th through March 1st with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Jimmy Heath has long been recognized as a brilliant instrumentalist and a magnificent composer and arranger. Jimmy is the middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers (Percy Heath/bass and Tootie Heath/drums), and is the father of Mtume. He has performed with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis. In 1948 at the age of 21, he performed in the First International Jazz Festival in Paris with McGhee, sharing the stage with Coleman Hawkins, Slam Stewart, and Erroll Garner. One of Heath's earliest big bands (1947-1948) in Philadelphia included John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Specs Wright, Cal Massey, Johnny Coles, Ray Bryant, and Nelson Boyd. Charlie Parker and Max Roach sat in on one occasion. During his career, Jimmy Heath has performed on more than 100 record albums including seven with The Heath Brothers and twelve as a leader. Jimmy has also written more than 125 compositions, many of which have become jazz standards and have been recorded by other artists including Art Farmer, Cannonball Adderley, Clark Terry, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, James Moody, Milt Jackson, Ahmad Jamal, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie J.J Johnson and Dexter Gordon. Jimmy has also composed extended works - seven suites and two string quartets - and he premiered his first symphonic work, "Three Ears," in 1988 at Queens College (CUNY) with Maurice Peress conducting. After having just concluded eleven years as Professor of Music at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, Heath maintains an extensive performance schedule and continues to conduct workshops and clinics throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada. He has also taught jazz studies at Jazzmobile, Housatonic College, City College of New York, and The New School for Social Research. In October 1997, two of his former students, trumpeters Darren Barrett and Diego Urcola, placed first and second in the Thelonious Monk Competition. There is a $20-$35 cover.
