BOSTON: TIGRAN HAMASYAN AT THE REGATTABAR
Jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan, a young musician born 1987 in Armenia, known simply as Tigran, performs at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel(1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Tuesday, February 24th at 7:30 pm. He began playing piano at the age of 3. Since the age of 13, he has played in European festivals. His reputation has steadily grown with every performance. In 2003, Tigran moved with his family to Los Angeles, California. He has won prestigious piano competitions, most notably, the 2006 Thelonious Monk jazz piano competition under supervision of Herbie Hancock. He has earned serious recognition with 4 albums and hundreds of concerts all around the world (Montreux, Montreal, North Sea, Juan Les Pins, Marciac, London Jazz Festival, Winter Festival in NY). Recently, Tigran was named the winner of the 2013 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Contemporary Music. His first album for Universal, recorded in Paris on solo piano, "A Fable", was released in 2011. It sold impressively for an instrumental album with 30,000 units. It received acclaim throughout including winning a French Grammy award in 2011. Tigran's rising stature in music garners notice globally wherever he has been able to be heard. Tigran's unique profile displays dazzling piano dexterity with an undeniably profound sense of composition. He's equally at ease with jazz, classical music, Armenian popular repertoire, rock, heavy metal, or avant-garde. His new album "Shadow Theater", recorded with his band, was released in the Fall of 2013. It exhibits continued growth as an original artist. It is fueled by his passion, atmospheric punk jazz improvisations fused with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. "Shadow Theater" is a fresh, inspiring sound that combines many colorful elements, capturing the listener into a musical journey. Call for cover/minimum information.
TORONTO: CHRIS TSUJIUCHI LIVE AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
Chris Tsujiuchi, a graduate of Sheridan College's Musical Theatre Performance program, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, February 24th at 8:00 pm. Performance credits include Fulgens and Lucres (PLS), Recurring John, Paradises Lost (SummerWorks Festival), and Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors (Lower Ossington Theatre and T3 productions). Musical Direction credits include A Misfortune (Next Stage Festival), HAIR (FirstAct Productions), One Song Glory '10 '11 & '12 (ActingUp Stage), A Joyful Noise (co-composer/lyricist, Smile Theatre), Mickey & Judy (Toronto Fringe), and bare: the Canadian Premiere (WatersEdge Productions). Chris has also worked as an accompanist and teacher at Sheridan College, Randolph Academy and George Brown College. He has toured extensively with the Nathaniel Dett Chorale as a singer and with Sharron Matthews as an accompanist/arranger (Sharron's Big Broadway Show, Jesus Thinks I'm Funny, GOLD, Full Dark). He can also be seen in his biannual "Chris-terical" series of cabarets at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
