BOSTON: ALLAN HARRIS "BLACK BAR JUKEBOX" CD RELEASE

Inspired by his youth growing up at the foot of the Apollo Theater, Allan Harris takes you on a 13 track journey blending Jazz, Soul, and Latin in an ode to the Black Bar Jukebox or yore at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Friday, February 27th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Allan Harris is a world-class singer, guitarist and songwriter. Perhaps best known for his interpretations of jazz standards, Allan's smooth vocals and guitar-styling easily cross genres, from jazz to rock to blues. He is unquestionably one of the most versatile talents in contemporary jazz and blues music. Very few vocalists in the industry have his charismatic combination of soulful yet elegant phrasing, exciting musicianship, and dynamic stage presence. Call for cover/minimum information.

BOSTON: DRKWAV WITH JOHN MEDESKI, SKERIK, AND ADAM DEITCH

John Medeski, Adam Deitch and Skerik present DRKWAV at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel(1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Friday, February 27th with shows at 7:30 & 10:00 pm. DRKWAV liveS in the unknown regions of dark sonics and they have chosen to unite to bring the dark truth to light! Keyboard master John Medeski thrives on the unpredictable, a trait that has kept his work with the trailblazing trio Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW) fresh and surprising for more than twenty years. With A Different Time, his first solo piano project, Medeski once again takes his sound in a completely unexpected direction - unexpected even to him. Skerik is a saxophone player who has popped up all over the scene, from his own band Critters Buggin' to his spot as co-founder of Garage A Trois to playing onstage with bands like Robert Walter's 20th Congress and Medeski, Martin, and Wood. Skerik is the consummate guest musician, always adding just the flavor the music requires without imposing too much of his own presence. Adam Deitch began composing around the age of 11 with his Dad's Ensoniq ESQ1 keyboard - one of the 1st keyboard/sequencers making beats that ranged from hip hop, pop, R&B, gospel, jazz and fusion. Pretty soon artists in the neighborhood came knocking. It was this early experience as a songwriter and a producer that have given Adam the wide spectrum of experience and influences that he brings to his work. There is a $25 cover.

TORONTO: DON THOMPSON QUARTET AT THE JAZZ BISTRO

The Don Thompson Quartet (Don Thompson - vibes, Reg Schwager - guitar, Jim Vivian - bass, and Terry Clarke - drums) will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, February 26th through 28th at 9:00 pm. One of the few multi-instrumentalists who sounds virtuosic on each chosen instrument, Don Thompson has made significant musical contributions on vibes, bass, and piano. His uncanny ability to move flawlessly from instrument to instrument has made him a valued sideman on the Toronto, and international, jazz scene. Thompson was born in Powell River, British Columbia, in 1940. By 1960, he had begun working steadily as a freelance musician, at this point, mainly on bass. In 1965, Thompson joined the now legendary John Handy Quintet and moved to San Francisco. During his tenure with the Handy band, Thompson appeared on several recordings, most notably the infamous John Handy Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival. He returned to Toronto in 1967, and since 1969 has been a resident there. In 1974, he became a member of guitarist Jim Hall's trio, primarily as a bassist. In 1982 he joined pianist George Shearing's band, a position he held for a five-year period. Since returning to Toronto, Thompson's lengthy musical collaborations have included work with, amongst others, Canadians Rob McConnell, Moe Koffman, Ed Bickert, Lenny Breau, and Sonny Greenwich. Thompson's long list of musical associations includes performances (and often recordings) with; Paul Desmond, Milt Jackson, Art Farmer, James Moody, Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Harry Edison, Frank Rosolino, Slide Hampton, Lee Konitz, Sarah Vaughan, Red Rodney, Joe Henderson, Dewey Redman, Red Mitchell, and Kenny Wheeler. There is a $15-$20 cover.
