NYC: THE ERIC PERSON BIG BAND AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Eric Person Big Band, now in it's second year, will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - ) on Monday, November 3rs with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The band has been trailblazing with dynamic performances far and wide. Saxophonist and composer Eric Person left his native St. Louis in 1982 looking to see what the New York City jazz scene had to offer. After an initial gig with the John Hicks Big Band, he was soon performing with a diverse array of jazz legends such as Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner, Chico Hamilton, the World Saxophone Quartet, Dave Douglas, Donald Byrd, Houston Person and many others. He's also been featured along side rock icons Vernon Reid, Ben Harper and funkateer Bootsy collins. There is a $10-$15 cover.

NYC: MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO: TRIBUTE TO DUKE ELLINGTON

The Matthew Shipp Trio will pay tribute to Duke Ellington at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 - ) on Monday, November 3rd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Fascinating things happen when you combine Duke Ellington's compositions with Matthew Shipp's approach to the piano trio. While Shipp and his trio show great knowledge of Ellington's work, they are not afraid to change its original intent to fit their own; in an approach atypical to an Ellington tribute, reverence is not demonstrated though purism or overt tradition. Shipp's expansive adaptations–dense, emotional, and full of quotes and allusions–successfully walk the fine line of rewarding those familiar with Ellington's music, while in no way requiring familiarity to appreciate the thought-provoking journeys they create. Much like Ellington, Shipp draws from the world of classical music, leaning towards a modern dissonance that ranges from playful to aggressive. In both cases, the ensuing moments of clarity and familiarity are all the more cathartic thanks to this contrast. Michael Bisio's almost-telepathic ability to both follow and propel Shipp's challenging improvisations speaks to their extensive joint experience. There is a $25 cover.
