TORONTO: INTERCAMBIO: TAP DANCE MEETS FLAMENCO
Intercambio, 2 guitars - 2 voices - 2 dancers: a jazz and flamenco rhythm exchange, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, October 7th at 8:00 pm. Percussive dance exists in many musical traditions and cultures. This unique collaboration takes a look at the alignment of tap dance and flamenco. Tap dance - strongly rooted in the history of jazz music, once the American vernacular when jazz was growing up, alongside flamenco dance - born of the merging of Gypsy, Jewish, Arab and Andalusian Folkloric music and rhythms. Intercambio takes the first step in a natural collaboration between these respective forms by combining the guitar, voice and dance of jazz, and placing it parallel to the guitar, voice, and dance of flamenco. In two sets of music, vocalists Fernando Gallego and Sophia Perlman, guitarists Dennis Duffin and Nathan Hiltz, and percussive dancers Tamar Ilana and Allison Toffan will borrow each other's phrasing, texture, and format while still maintaining the identity and integrity of their respective instruments and genres. There is a $15 cover.
