TORONTO: SCOTT WALKER: WHAT EXACTLY IS THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK?
Scott Walker brings his show "What Exactly Is The Great American Songbook?" to THE JAZZ BISTRO(251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, October 5th at 7:00 pm. One song was born out of a sarcastic comment to a publisher, and became a songwriter's most popular - but least favourite. Another song arrived unexpectedly in the mail. Still another was inspired by a songwriter's unrequited love affair with a beloved movie star. They all have one thing in common: they are part of the Great American Songbook. Drawing on his popular CBC feature, The Musical Almanac, Scott Walker explains - in story and song - how the Songbook was born, what defines it, and its enduring legacy. He also delves into some of the songs written more recently that have become part of what Scott calls Scott is known by his colleagues on the morning show at Classical 96.3 FM as the "singing newscaster". Broadcaster, actor, singer, and writer, Scott's theatre credits include Urinetown [Belfry Theatre], As You Like It [Blue Bridge], Anything Goes and Company [Reprise Concerts], Guys and Dolls [Rainbow Stage], Colette - the Colours of Love [Phoenix & Belfry Theatres], The Legend of the Dumbells [Charlottetown Festival] and Of Mice and Men [MTC]. Scott has also appeared on television and film, most recently in the Hallmark movie Freshman His critically-acclaimed solo CD contains selections from the Songbook, on which Scott is accompanied by a full 40-piece orchestra, including many members of the legendary Boss Brass. He is also the voice of the YouTube comedy sensation Spiders on Drugs - 34,000,000 hits and counting! Scott will also introduce his newest release, Someone I Don't Even Know, and tell the story behind this old/new love song that began with a dance.Scott is accompanied by Mark Camilleri on the piano. Anne Wootten directs. Call for cover/minimum information.
