NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND
NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, September 9th, 20th & 27th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: BUD POWELL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT BIRDLAND
A 90th Birthday Celebration of jazz pianist Bud Powell (September 27, 1924 - July 31, 1966) will be held at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, September 23rd through 27th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Celebrating will be a band made up of Greg Osby (alto sax), Melissa Aldana (tenor sax, 9/23-26), Jaleel Shaw (altosax, 9/27), Dan Tepfer (piano), Lonnie Plaxico (bass) and Matt Wilson (drums). Powell was born and raised in Harlem, New York City. While Thelonious Monk became his close friend, his greatest influence was Art Tatum. Along with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Powell was a leading figure in the development of bebop, and his virtuosity as a pianist led many to call him the Charlie Parker of the piano. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: KENNY WERNER: COALITION AT THE BLUE NOTE
Kenny Werner, a world-class pianist and composer, will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, September 26th through 28th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Born in Brooklyn in 1951 and growing up on Long Island, Werner began playing and performing at a young age, first recording on television at the age of 11. He formed his own trio in 1981 with drummer Tom Rainey and bassist Ratzo Harris. The trio matured for 14 years, wowing audiences in America and Europe and recording four albums along the way. For several years now, Werner has toured and recorded in a quintet format, releasing Balloons: Live at the Blue Note on Half Note Records just last year.
