NYC: JANE BUNNETT & MAQUEQUE AT THE BLUE NOTE

Canadian flutist and saxophonist Jane Bunnett's new sextet, Maqueque will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday, September 22nd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm, celebrating the release of their self-titled debut album. For more than thirty years, through her longstanding ensemble Spirits of Havana, Bennett has been introducing North American jazz audiences to some of the finest musicians that Cuba has to offer (providing early opportunities to such future greats as Pedrito Martinez, Dafnis Prieto, and Yosvany Terry, among others). Now, with her new sextet, Maqueque, she introduces some of Cuba's most promising female musicians to the world. Maqueque consists of virtuoso drummer Yissy Garcia, dynamic percussionist Dayme, Yusa on tres guitar and fretless bass, pianist Danae, and Magdelys on batas and congas. All are great vocalists as well as instrumentalists, and all are in their early 20's (with the exception of Yusa). Their blend of scintillating Afro-Cuban rhythms, folkloric influences, exhilarating jazz, and soulful vocals has broad appeal. There is a $10-$15 cover.
