NYC: DENA DEROSE CD RELEASE CELEBRATION AT BIRDLAND
Jazz vocalist/ pianist Dena DeRose will celebrate the release of her latest CD at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday, September 23rd at 6:00 pm. She is joined by David Wong (bass), Matt Wilson (drums), Eric Alexander (tenor sax), Gary Smulyan (baritone sax) and Ingrid Jensen (trumpet). HighNote Records welcomes Dena to their roster with her label debut recording "We Won't Forget You... An Homage To Shirley Horn" which features the understated, swinging side of the late, great Horn. As this year would have been Ms. Horn's 80th birthday, it seems only appropriate for DeRose, also a triple threat vocalist, pianist, and arranger, to pay tribute to one of her major idols. Boasting an imaginative set list of some lesser recorded gems and varied use of the instrumental colors available, Dena DeRose's first release on HighNote is jazz singing and playing of the highest order. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: BUD POWELL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT BIRDLAND
A 90th Birthday Celebration of jazz pianist Bud Powell (September 27, 1924 - July 31, 1966) will be held at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, September 23rd through 27th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Celebrating will be a band made up of Greg Osby (alto sax), Melissa Aldana (tenor sax, 9/23-26), Jaleel Shaw (altosax, 9/27), Dan Tepfer (piano), Lonnie Plaxico (bass) and Matt Wilson (drums). Powell was born and raised in Harlem, New York City. While Thelonious Monk became his close friend, his greatest influence was Art Tatum. Along with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Powell was a leading figure in the development of bebop, and his virtuosity as a pianist led many to call him the Charlie Parker of the piano. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: THE COOKERS - ALBUM RELEASE AT THE BLUE NOTE
The Cookers celebrate the release of their new CD at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday & Wednesday, September 23rd & 24th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Hard Bop is an intensely swinging groove using Soul, Blues and Gospel influences, extended harmonies and blistering solos. The group performs newly arranged versions of classic compositions by Billy Harper and George Cables along with works by the other members of the ensemble. While giants in their own right, the members of this ensemble have performed and/or recorded with pretty much every jazz great of the past 40 years including Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Jackie McLean, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Lee Morgan, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, and Roy Haynes, to name just a few.
