NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND
NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, September 9th, 20th & 27th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: COLTRANE REVISITED AT BIRDLAND
Coltrane Revisited, a tribute to the Jazz legend John Coltrane, will be presented at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, September 16th through 20th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. John William Coltrane, also known as "Trane", was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and was later at the forefront of free jazz. He organized at least fifty recording sessions as a leader during his career, and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, notably with trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Performing on Tuesday & Wednesday, the 16th & 17th, will be Joe Lovano (sax), Ben Allison, Lonnie Plaxico (bass), Matt Wilson and Andrew Cyrille (drums). Thursday through Saturday, the 18th through 20th: Joe Lovano (sax) ,Mike Mainieri (vibes), Lonnie Plaxico (bass), Steve Smith (drums). There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: ROY HARGROVE QUINTET AT THE BLUE NOTE
The Roy Hargrove Quintet performs at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Saturday & Sunday, September 20th & 21st with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. At 36, trumpeter Roy Hargrove has firmly established himself as among the premier players in jazz and beyond. Ever-stretching into more challenging and colorful ways to flex his musical chops, Hargrove has left indelible imprints in a vast array of artful settings. During his tenure on the Verve label alone, he has recorded an album with a hand-picked collection of the world's greatest tenor saxophonists (With the Tenors of Our Time), an album of standards with strings (Moment to Moment) and, in 2003, introduced his own hip hop/jazz collective The RH Factor with the groundbreaking CD Hard Groove (swiftly followed by the limited edition EP, Strength). Hargrove has also won Grammy Awards for two vastly different projects. In 1997, Roy's Cuban-based band Crisol (including piano legend Jesus "Chucho" Valdes and wonder drummer Horatio "El Negro" Hernandez) won the Best Latin Jazz Performance Grammy for the album Habana. And in 2002, Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker won Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group, for their three-way collaboration Directions in Music. There is a $30-$45 cover.
