BOSTON: MARK TURNER QUARTET 'LATHE OF HEAVEN' CD RELEASE SHOW

Mark Turner, one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, will perform atTHE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Tuesday, September 16th at 7:30 pm. Mark is renowned for his intimate expressivity on the full range of the tenor. Lathe of Heaven is his ECM leader debut, following albums for the label in the cooperative trio Fly with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, and appearances on ECM recordings by Billy Hart, Enrico Rava and Stefano Bollani. Turner leads a quartet of kindred spirits here, often entwining long serpentine lines with rising-star trumpeter Avishai Cohen, underpinned by the lithe and powerful rhythm section of bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore. Turner has appeared on dozens of recordings, including Enrico Rava's New York Days and Billy Hart's All Our Reasons and One Is the Other on ECM. With the Fly trio the saxophonist has released three albums, including two for ECM: Sky & Country and Year of the Snake. Lathe of Heaven is his first leader date since 2001. There is a $25 cover.

BOSTON: INTRODUCING POLLY GIBBONS: A MAGICAL EVENING AT RYLES JAZZ CLUB

Resonance Records will present singer Polly Gibbons in a special Boston area appearance, "Introducing Polly Gibbons: A Magical Evening at Ryles Jazz Club" on Tuesday, September 16th at 8:00 pm atRYLES JAZZ CLUB (212 Hampshire Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-876-9330). The showcase coincides with the release of her new CD and video disc on the Resonance Records Label: Many Faces of Love. Polly Gibbons descends from a grand tradition of jazz and blues women whose singing exudes strength, defiance, and sassy wit. There are many pretenders to that throne, but Polly's artistry demands attention. British-born and just thirty when she made this album, Polly has a raspy, lived-in tone, a walloping sense of swing, and a dramatic flair that grabs the heart. Emotionally, her singing ranges from a slow burn to a bonfire; interpretively, she always rings true. Call for cover/minimum information.

TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: KRISTIAN PODLACHA

Kristian Podlacha performs at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, September 16th at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist series. Born into a musical family, Kristian started studying piano at 7 and was writing classically by 8. Early exposure to Oscar Peterson and Django Reinhardt caused him to fall deeply in love with jazz, a style of music that has shaped his life. Since then, he has explored and performed swing, French jazz manouche, contemporary jazz, and classical music. The result is a highly personal sound blending the harmony of French impressionists Ravel and Debussy with the passion of jazz manouche; all placed within the sophistication of modern jazz. Kristian has performed at virtually all of the major live music venues in Toronto, and performed for Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, an event honouring Justin Trudeau. He has shared the stage with such luminaries as Jason Marsalis, Leslie Dawn-Knowles, members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company, and on OmniTV, CP24 and Canada's Got Talent. He is currently studying piano at the University of Toronto with scholarship. There is no cover.
