NYC: LORNA LUFT IN "ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE" AT BIRDLAND

The Broadway at Birdland concert series presents the return of Lorna Luft toBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Monday, June 9th at 7:00 & 10:30 pm. The late show will preclude the regularly scheduled "Jim Caruso's Cast Party," which will resume on the 16th of June. In October 2013, Lorna hosted a record breaking two-night benefit concert for the Actors Fund, "Lorna's Pink Party," which raised over $150,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and cancer research charities. Lorna was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in Dec 2012. After treatment she is cancer-free and ecstatic to be bringing "Accentuate the Positive" to Birdland! "Accentuate the Positive" will include many beloved standards, and in a special section, will pay tribute to Johnny Mercer, who has been called "America's poet," and was a close family friend. Mercer, who won 4 Academy Awards, also wrote the lyrics to Judy Garland's television theme song. The song became "Lorna," which Judy Garland sang to her daughter on her television show. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS: JEFF LORBER FUSION

Jeff Lorber Fusion will be presented at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday, June 9th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. By the late 1970s, trailblazing keyboardist/ composer/ producer Jeff Lorber had become a prominent figure in the new movement known as jazz fusion - a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. Lorber and his band, the Jeff Lorber Fusion, first honed their craft in the Portland, Oregon, club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a national and international audience via a combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures and compelling rhythms. In subsequent years, Lorber dropped the term "fusion" from his billing as the movement evolved into what is currently known as contemporary jazz. Still, he continued to explore the innovative, improvisational potential of grafting other musical forms to the jazz idiom. Lorber has been just as prolific and innovative in the new century as he was in the last, with recordings on Narada (Philly Style, Flip Side), Blue Note (He Had a Hat) and Peak (Heard That). There is a $20-$35 cover.
