MANHATTAN: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, June 14th, 21st & 28th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

Stacey sings from the soul, telling her stories with faultless phrasing and a lucid, enchanting voice. Stacey returns to Birdland in support of her brand new Brazilian-flavored CD, "The Changing Lights," (EMI) a follow-up to "Dreamer In Concert," (her first ever live album) the Grammy nominated, "Breakfast on the Morning Tram," (2007) and all-French, "Raconte-moi," (2009). Stacey's band features Jim Tomlinson (sax) whose songwriting partnership with famed novelist Kazuo Ishiguro has formed the central plank in Stacey's recent albums. NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS: RAMSEY LEWIS ELECTRIC WITH PHILIP BAILEY

After his classic acoustic albums in the 1960s, the change that was in the air during the 70s enticed Ramsey Lewis toward the electric realm. With this new sound, he collaborated with the enigmatic and iconic, Earth, Wind & Fire. Sun Goddess, the result of this creative summit, was an album with sleek grooves and gorgeous melodies that continues to flow with the upliftng and positive vibes of that time. The album reached across the musical rainbow and, rightfully so, it became a huge cross-over hit; charting #1 on the Billboard Black Albums chart as well as the Jazz album chart and it charted #12 in the Pop chart. Philip Bailey is an R&B, soul, gospel and funk singer, songwriter, percussionist and longtime member of Earth, Wind & Fire. Bailey has won seven Grammy Awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and also the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Philip performs as a special guest vocalist and percussionist with the Ramsey Lewis Electric Band performing the jazz and R&B classics which grew out of the two performers' legendary careers.
