NYC: TIERNEY SUTTON QUARTET "AFTER BLUE: THE JONI MITCHELL PROJECT"
The Tierney Sutton Quartet will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080)on Tuesday through Saturday, Jume 23rd through 28th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Known for her original and edgy interpretations of the classic jazz songbook, vocalist Tierney Sutton brings songs from her CD "After Blue: The Joni Mitchell Project" to the Birdland stage. The recipient of numerous honors, including a Jazz Times Magazine cover story, she has been a frequent performer at prestigious venues including Birdland and Carnegie Hall and has been featured in popular films and commercials. On "After Blue," 2013 Grammy nominee for "Best Jazz Vocal Album," Tierney provides a fresh take on the music of Joni Mitchell. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS: MICHEL CAMILO - SOLO PIANO
Michel Camilo will perform music from his 2013 Latin GRAMMY award winning album "What's Up?" for the first time in NYC at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday & Tuesday, June 23rd & 24th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. A pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer that flavors his tunes with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Michel Camilo's musical language is an expressive combination of his Dominican Republic musical heritage and a rich, intelligent use of jazz harmonies and textures. Camilo composed his first piece at age five then studied at the National Conservatory for thirteen years. At age sixteen, he became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. In 1979, he moved to New York City where he furthered his education at Mannes and the Juilliard School of Music. Since his 1985 Carnegie Hall debut and his 1987 composer debut with the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic, Camilo has become a leading figure in jazz in the US, Europe, Japan, and the Caribbean. November of 1988 marked his debut on a major record label with the release of his self- titled album, Michel Camilo (Sony). There is a $30-$45 cover.
