Negleatha "drj" Johnson brings her 'Gospel Soul' sound to BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Wednesday, June 25th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Since her debut album in 1996 entitled A Life Poured Out, Negleatha "drj" Johnson has remained true to her "calling" to compose and sing music that heals, restores and ushers in waves of hope. Hers is the music that inspires whether it's nestled in energizing Latin rhythms, contemporary chords, or a genre yet to be defined. As you listen, you can't help but be taken in by her calming vocal musings as she unwraps songs exposing a type of personal transparency that could only come from one who has found peace in her faith, purpose and unique music style. Her thought provoking music puts the listener safely on a journey towards wholeness as she reveals much of her own life story in song - a story that began in a small town in North Carolina where Negleatha played the piano for her church and high school choirs. Michelle Walker returns to the DC area to promote her upcoming CD release, Love Misery, with a performance atBETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Wednesday, June 25th at 7:30 pm. Armed with a provocative, whiskey-soaked tone, this charismatic jazz singer uses a dynamic blend of blues, bebop, swing and soul to create her story. She is often compared to Cassandra Wilson, Nina Simone and Betty Carter in style. Based in New York, she bends the lines and boundaries of jazz vocal art. Michelle is very versatile, blessed with a beautifully distinctive voice of rich colors and adventurous flexibility. In her new CD, she has arrange a unique collection of jazz standards, originals and pop tunes. Joining her will be Toru Dodo on piano,Michael O'Brien on bass and Willard Dyson on drums. Michelle has toured all throughout the US, Europe and the Far East. Highlights of her career include the Lincoln Center Women in Jazz Festival and performing at the White House for the lighting of the National Christmas Tree. There is a $15 cover.
