BOSTON: ALEX ALVEAR & MANGO BLUE

Alex Alvear & Mango Blue will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757 - ) on Saturday, February 8th at 7:30 & 10:00 pm. The group blends an exciting mixture of musical styles to create a refreshing new sound in Afro-Latin and World music, through songs of celebration and social conscience. Alex Alvear & Mango Blue is a high-powered, all-original music ensemble that has delighted audiences and promoters alike, throughout the Americas with its infectious sound. Led by Ecuadorian composer, bassist and singer Alex Alvear, this invigorating hybrid playfully integrates a wide array of influences from Rhythm & Blues, Jazz and Funk to Caribbean Roots, with a strong rhythmical foundation that draws from diverse Afro-Latin musical traditions. This stylistic fusion allows for a concoction that translates into music that transcends ethnic boundaries, providing a new color in the latin music palette. The members of this band come from different parts of the world including Venezuela, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, the US and Ecuador and are among the best instrumentalists in the region. There is a $20 cover.

NEW ENGLAND: THE FOLLEN ANGELS AT ST JOHN'S COFFEE HOUSE

The Follen Angels (Hildy Grossman - vocals, Michael Larson - piano), Kenneth W. Dantzig - drums, Rick Stone - sax, and Sean Farias - bass) will perform at St John's Coffee House (74 Pleasant Street, Arlington, MA - 339-368-5656) on Saturday, February 8th at 7:30 pm. Their show is called "Gershwin, Cole Porter and Friends" presenting songs of the greatest 20th Century composers of the American Songbook. Songs include: I got Rhythm, Lady Be Good, My Heart Belongs to Daddy, Night and Day, What is This Thing Called Love?, Embraceable You, The Man I Love, I Love Paris, and many more. Tickets are $18.

TORONTO: MARK EISENMAN TRIO

THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) presents the Mark Eisenman Trio (Mark Eisenman - piano, Steve Wallace - bass, John Sumner - drums), a hard-swinging group established in 1987 and led by one of this country's in-demand jazz pianists, on Thursday through Saturday, February 6th through 8th at 9:00 pm. Born in New York City but based in Toronto since 1972, Mark started studying the piano with his father. By the age of eighteen he had resolved that he would be pursuing the piano as a career interest. He entered into the music program at York University and after a short time discovered jazz music. With his introduction to this idiom his musical interest peaked. He is a skillful soloist, a versatile ensemble player and, a thoughtful and sensitive accompanist. Those familiar with his range of abilities as a musician recognize that his efforts inevitably represent a genuine complement to whatever context he finds himself placed in. There is a $15 cover.

D.C.: THE KENNY GARRETT QUINTET CD RELEASE PARTY

The Kenny Garrett Quintet is playing atBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, February 6th through 9th, with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The show celebrates the release of his latest CD: "Pushing the World Away" Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Mercer Ellington) through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation. D.C.: PEDRITO MARTINEZ AT THE ATLAS

World-class percussionist, singer and bandleader Pedrito Martinez will perform at ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (1333 H Street NE, Washington, DC - 202-399-7993 - ) on Saturday, February 8th at 8:00 pm. Martinez dazzles audiences with a sound plated firmly in the Afro-Cuban Rumba tradition and in the bata rhythms and vocal chants of the music of Yoruba and Santeria. The Cuban native and now New York resident has performed, recorded, and/or toured with Paquito D'Rivera; Brian Lynch; Steve Turre; Me'shell Ndege'Ocello; Eddie Palmieri; Bill Summers and Los Hombres Calientes; Arturo "Chico" O'Farrill; Stefon Harris; Bebo Valdes; Cassandra Wilson; Joe Lovano, and Sting, (for his rainforest benefit, with Elton John and Bruce Springsteen). Pedro was also featured in the documentary film on Cuban music, Calle 54. Mr. Martinez was also a member of the highly successful, Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band,Yerba Buena with which he recorded two albums and toured the world opening for bands including the Dave Matthews Band, Willie Nelson and Ray Charles. Tickets are $33.50.

MARYLAND: DEANNA BOGART BAND AT BETHESDA BLUES

On Friday, February 7th at 8:30 pm, Deanna Bogart and her band take the stage at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500). Deanna Bogart is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and multifaceted musician whose fans value the diversity of her genre-free zone. As a bandleader/ singer/ songwriter/ producer/ pianist/ sax player, Deanna combines the best of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country and jazz into a splendid blend she calls "blusion." Deanna's fusion of blusion (spontaneous, sophisticated, fearless and fun) has garnered her three consecutive Blues Music Awards' Horn Instrumentalist of the Year for 2008, 2009 and 2010 and an endorsement contract with Rico Reeds. She has won, at last count, more than 20 Wammies, the music awards for the hotly contested Washington, D.C. region. There is a $20 cover.
