BOSTON: THE BAD PLUS AT SCULLERS

The Bad Plus will perform atSCULLERS JAZZ CLUB(400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Thursday & Friday, February 6th & 7th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The Bad Plus is a jazz trio consisting of pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson, and drummer Dave King, originating from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Iverson, Anderson and King first played together in 1989 but established The Bad Plus in 2000. The band recorded their first album, a self-titled effort released on Fresh Sound, after playing only three gigs together. A live performance at the Village Vanguard was heard by Columbia Records representative Yves Beauvais, and the band was signed to Columbia in 2002. The Bad Plus has spent more than a decade redefining what a piano-bass-drums trio can and should be. They've reached audiences of all demographic stripes with an uncompromising body of original music (plus some ingenious, genre-jumping covers) and dedicated touring around the globe. D.C.: THE KENNY GARRETT QUINTET CD RELEASE PARTY

The Kenny Garrett Quintet is playing atBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, February 6th through 9th, with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The show celebrates the release of his latest CD: "Pushing the World Away" Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Mercer Ellington) through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation. D.C.: GREAT NOISE ENSEMBLE: PAN-DEMONIUM

The Great Noise Ensemble presents Pan-Demonium at ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (1333 H Street NE, Washington, DC - 202-399-7993) on Friday, February 7th at 8:00 pm. The event is eclectic program of odd juxtapositions and grotesque visuals! Victoria Bond's Frescoes and Ash reflects on mosaics and frescoes discovered in the buried ruins of Pompeii. Armando Bayolo's Caprichos, in a new version for American ensembles, is motivated by Francisco de Goya's satirical and scathing engravings from early 19th century Spain. Ned McGowan'sUrban Turban is influenced by the juxtaposition of Western instruments with Indian/Karnatic rhythms. H.K. Gruber's classic "pan-demonium," Frankenstein!, takes its inspiration from subversive poems and engravings for children with an edge and humor that are decidedly adult. MARYLAND: DEANNA BOGART BAND AT BETHESDA BLUES

On Friday, February 7th at 8:30 pm, Deanna Bogart and her band take the stage at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500). Deanna Bogart is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and multifaceted musician whose fans value the diversity of her genre-free zone. As a bandleader/ singer/ songwriter/ producer/ pianist/ sax player, Deanna combines the best of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country and jazz into a splendid blend she calls "blusion." Deanna's fusion of blusion (spontaneous, sophisticated, fearless and fun) has garnered her three consecutive Blues Music Awards' Horn Instrumentalist of the Year for 2008, 2009 and 2010 and an endorsement contract with Rico Reeds. She has won, at last count, more than 20 Wammies, the music awards for the hotly contested Washington, D.C. region. There is a $20 cover.
