BOSTON: RICARDO GRILLI AT SCULLER'S

Ricardo Grilli will perform with his band (Christian Li - Piano, Edward Perez - Bass, Lee Fish - Drums) at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Tuesday, February 4th at 8:00 pm. Based in the U.S. for five years brazilian guitarist and composer Ricardo Grilli is quickly gaining space in the country's exclusive Jazz scene. During this time he has played with Chris Potter, Jason Palmer, Mark Turner, Hector Martignon and Dave Liebman among others and venues such as The Blue Note, The Side Door, The Bar Next Door and Rockwood Music Hall. His sound can be described as a blend between Contemporary Jazz and Brazilian Music, featuring intricate rhythms, harmonies and high energy improvisation where each member of the group brings their own ideas to contribute to the sound. The performance will feature music from If On A Winter's Night a Traveler, Ricardo's debut album inspired by the Italo Calvino book of the same name and other concepts. TORONTO: DENIELLE BASSELS TRIO AT THE JAZZ BISTRO

Jazz Vocalist Denielle Bassels and her band ( Jacob Gorzhaltsan: Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Andy Mac: Guitar, Joe Ryan: Drums, Scott Hunter: Upright Bass) will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, February 4th at 8:00 pm. Bassels is a Toronto-born singer, bandleader and songwriter of jazz, blues, and music off the beaten path. Her music career was conceived at the age of 13, when she heard Nina Simone's "My Baby Just Cares For Me" on the speakers in a crowded HMV store. Since discovering jazz, Bassels has been influenced by singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee and Amy Winehouse. It was when Bassels moved to Switzerland that she fell into performing jazz in clubs. Upon returning to Canada, Bassels enrolled in Humber College for the vocal jazz program and have since released an EP entitled "Gypsy Summer". Her group has performed at jazz festivals and clubs across Ontario, such as the Beaches and Toronto Jazz Festivals, Gate 403, Revival, and the Rivoli. Denielle Bassels is thrilled to make her Jazz Bistro debut. There is a $10 cover.

D.C.: JANIS SEIGEL AT BLUES ALLEY

Jazz vocalist Janis Seigel will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday, February 4th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Over the past three and a half decades, the voice of Janis Siegel - a nine-time Grammy winner and a seventeen-time Grammy nominee - has been an undeniable force in The Manhattan Transfer's diverse musical catalog. Alongside her career as a member of this 36-year musical institution, Siegel has also sustained a solo career that has spawned more than a half dozen finely-crafted solo albums and numerous collaborative projects, amassed a large international fan base and garnered consistently high critical praise. Call for cover/minimum information.

D.C.: ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: JS WILLIAMS QUARTET

The JS Williams Quartet will perform as Artists in Residence at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) every Tuesday in February with performances at 7:00 & 8:30 pm. Jazz trumpeter, composer, and singer/songwriter JS Williams' music blends funk and soul with jazz to create a vibrant sound that resonates. His debut independent recording, "The Late BLUEmer," shines with thought-provoking melodies, rich harmonies, and a stellar cast of musicians. Although he credits jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown as his inspiration to play, his musical influences range from Beethoven to John Coltrane to The Roots. Since receiving his Master's Degree at Queens College under the acclaimed trumpeter/arranger Michael Philip Mossman, Williams has performed with the New Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, and Bohemian Caverns Jazz orchestras. He has shared the stage with a vast array of artists including Bobby Short, Gregory Porter, Eric Roberson, and Chuchito Valdes. Currently a doctoral candidate at Five Towns College, JS Williams continues to study, educate, and perform music around the country. There is a $10 cover.
