NY STATE: PIANO BAR WITH BOBBY BELFRY AT THE BEAR MOUNTAIN INN
Each Thursday night beginning at 8:00 pm, THE BLUE ROOF TAPAS BAR at THE BEAR MOUNTAIN INN(55 Hessian Drive, Bear Mountain, NY - 845-786-2731) will host a rollicking night of great music from Sinatra to GaGa and just about every musical genre in between on Thursdays, with award winning recording artist and songwriter Bobby Belfry as singer & host and the brilliant all-around musician and singer David Budway at the piano, as well as the magnificent Sarah Mucho on vocals (this lady can croon and rock then tear it all up and start over again! If you don't know what that means-there's only one way to find out!) The mic is OPEN! So if you sing, bring sheet music and sing a tune. AND if you don't sing, sing along anyway! BOSTON: STEVEN FEIFKE SEPTET
The Steven Feifke Septet (Steven Feifke - Piano, Benny Benack III - Trumpet, Andrew Gould - Alto Sax, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown - Tenor Sax ,Alex Wintz - Guitar, Raviv Markovitz - Bass, and Jimmy Macbride - Drums) will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Thursday, January 23rd at 7:30 pm. At just 22 years old, Steven is making a name for himself as an artist to look out for. Since moving to New York City in 2009, Steven has been afforded the opportunity of performing and collaborating with some of the most recognizable names in jazz at venues throughout the world. In the fall of 2011, Steven was selected as a semifinalist to the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition. As Steven's passion for music has grown, so has his penchant for writing. His original compositions and arrangements have been played around the world by artists such as Stefon Harris, Paul McCandless, Lenny Pickett, Bryan Lynch, Rich Perry, and Dave Pietro. Steven plans to release a full length album of original big band music in the Spring of 2014. There is a $20 cover.
TORONTO: DARREN SIGESMUND SEXTET
2010 JUNO nominee and Galaxie Rising Star winner Toronto trombonist Darren Sigesmund will perform atTHE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday & Saturday, January 23rd & 25th at 9;00 pm.The sexett includes Darren Sigesmund - trombone, Eliana Cuevas - vocals, Luiz Deniz - alto saxophone, Michael Davidson - vibes, Jim Vivian - bass, Ethan Ardelli - drums. Sigesmund has firmly established his Strands project as one of Canada's leading national and international touring ensembles. Following up on his 2008 debut quintet CD Strands, Sigesmund released Strands II, nominated for a 2010 JUNO for Best Traditional Jazz Album. Sigesmund received the 2010 Galaxie Rising Star award for Best Composition ("Dance for Leila") at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. The music in Strands consists of Sigesmund's award-winning signature: complex musical passages, accessible melodies, wordless vocalizations and a sound that synthesizes wildly diverse influences from Latin, jazz and classical music into totally distinctive works. From the drive and passion of Argentinean Tango and Brazilian song forms, the rhythmic sophistication and fast-paced melodies of Balkan music to the lyricism and counterpoint of Western classical compositions, Sigesmund distills these influences into cutting-edge Canadian jazz.There is a $15 cover.
TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: VICTOR XU
Victor Xu will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday, January 23rd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm as part of the clubs Young Artist Brunch Series. Born in 1992, Victor Xu began playing piano at a young age and had successfully achieved placements in competitions with the Royal Conservatory of Music throughout his classical studies. His interest in jazz soon emerged, and soonafter he began studying at York University. Utilizing a combination of contemporary melody and traditional left hand harmony within improvisation, Victor often strives for a balance of melodic proficiency and a consideration for leaving space. Currently Victor plays with various bands in Toronto, including Sly Why, The Harrison Vetro Quartet, and Pagoda. No Cover Charge.
D.C.: ROY AYERS AT BLUES ALLEY
Roy Ayers performs at BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday, January 23rd through Sunday, January 26th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Constantly performing and recording since the 1960s, he is the most well known jazz vibraphonists. He has produced some of the most loved modern soul-jazz records of all time. Classics beyond genre such as, "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", most influential afro-jazz with musician Fela Kuti, "Africa - Centre Of The World", and the most seminal jazz-funk, such as "Running Away". In his 40-plus years as a vibraphonist, he has produced a string of soul and funk classics that has arguably made him the second-most sampled musician in hip-hop, after James Brown.
