NYC: LES PAUL MONDAYS FEATURING MATT "GUITAR" MURPHY
Fresh from Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival at Madison Square Garden (April 12th), Matt "Guitar" Murphy appears as featured guest at Les Paul Mondays atIRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121 - ) on Monday, April 15th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Matt 'Guitar' Murphy was born in Sunflower, Mississippi and was educated in Memphis, where his father worked at the Peabody Hotel. He played with Howlin' Wolf as early as 1948, Little Junior Parker was also in the band at the time. By 1952, Murphy was in Chicago, where he began his long association with Memphis Slim by playing on his dates for United Records and Vee Jay Records, including the album, At The Gate of Horn (1959). He was already a legend among serious guitarists by the 1960s, famed for the incredibly fast and intricate blues riffs that would soon change rock and roll. A partial list of artists with whom Matt has performed with include Robert Lockwood Jr., Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Little Junior Parker, Ike Turner, Memphis Slim, James Cotton, Otis Rush, Etta James, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Chuck Berry, Joe Louis Walker, the Zaichik Brothers and The Blues Brothers. There is a $35 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
