CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH
Marissa Mulder presents "Tom ... in His Words" - the music of Tom Waits - at the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) in four performances, Wednesday through Saturday, March 27th through 30th at 7:00 pm. Mulder, who, since her 2011 MetroStar Talent Challenge win, has emerged as one of the most promising singers in New York, collaborates for the first time with music director Jon Weber, and with Lauren Fox who serves as director. Weber, on piano, leads a trio that includes Ritt Henn on bass and Mike Rosengarten on guitar. In "Tom ... in His Words" Mulder takes Waits at his word, exploring some of his iconic songs ("Downtown Train" and "Ol' 55"), as well as lesser-known treasures like "Broken Bicycles" and "Alice." The 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has always operated on the fringes, blending strains of jazz and the blues, even vaudeville, into his rock ballads and scores. Mulder, who made her cabaret debut in 2010 at Don't Tell Mama, followed that with her critically acclaimed tribute to songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen in 2011. Both shows were directed by singer Karen Oberlin. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
