The Matt Wilson Quartet, With Jeff Lederer, saxophone; Kirk Knuffke, cornet; Chris Lightcap, bass; Matt Wilson, drums; John Medeski, piano, performs at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, January 30th through February 2nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Matt Wilson is a phenomenal drummer who has played with, and been praised by, a seemingly endless list of contemporary jazz greats. In addition to his instrumental skills, he receives constant praise as a bandleader and a creative force who experiments and pushes both sidemen and genre boundaries alike, while remaining widely accessible in every context. Joining the group this time will be Wilson's longtime friend and musical partner, John Medeski, whose feel, energy, deep roots, wide range, have influenced many performances. Funnily enough, the simple - albeit far too rare - element that really elevates Wilson's performances is his obvious and unadulterated joy. Wilson's sense of humor, tireless smile, and wild, spirited energy acts as the catalyst to everyone onstage and off feeling good and having FUN. There is a $35-$45 cover.

NYC: THE JOEY DEFRANCESCO ORGAN TRIO AT BIRDLAND
The Joey DeFrancesco Organ Trio will perform atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, January 28th through February 1st with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Joey DeFrancesco comes from a musical family. His Grandfather Joseph DeFrancesco (his name sake) was a reed man. His father "Papa" John DeFrancesco is a fine jazz organist in his own right. At the age of 4 Joey began taking a strong interest in the organ. By the time he was five, he was playing Jimmy Smith songs verbatim. As the years went on his interest and love for the organ and music grew stronger. At 16 he signed an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records, releasing his first record "All Of Me" at 17. This record was single handedly responsible for the great resurgence of the Hammond sound in popular music. At 22, John McLaughlin called him along with drummer Dennis Chambers, to form the group the "Free Spirits". This band toured extensively for 4 years. Joey has been around the world and back dozens of times with his own trio, but also playing and recording with some of the greatest musicians in the world such as, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Frank Wess, Benny Golson, James Moody, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, and many more. He has won the Down Beat Critics poll eleven times & the Readers poll ever year since 2002, as well as countless Jazz Journalist awards, and countless others. In 2004 Joey was nominated for a Grammy for his record "Falling In Love Again", and again in 2010 for his release titled "Never Can Say Goodbye". Currently, Joey continues to tour with his own group, and other all-star projects. His latest release "One For Rudy" is a tribute to the legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Joey has played a key role in the development of numerous modern organs & keyboards that replicate the classic Hammond organ/Leslie speaker sound. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
