NYC: THE JOEY DEFRANCESCO ORGAN TRIO AT BIRDLAND

The Joey DeFrancesco Organ Trio will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, January 28th through February 1st with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Joey DeFrancesco comes from a musical family. His Grandfather Joseph DeFrancesco (his name sake) was a reed man. His father "Papa" John DeFrancesco is a fine jazz organist in his own right. At the age of 4 Joey began taking a strong interest in the organ. By the time he was five, he was playing Jimmy Smith songs verbatim. As the years went on his interest and love for the organ and music grew stronger. At 16 he signed an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records, releasing his first record "All Of Me" at 17. This record was single handedly responsible for the great resurgence of the Hammond sound in popular music. At 22, John McLaughlin called him along with drummer Dennis Chambers, to form the group the "Free Spirits". This band toured extensively for 4 years. Joey has been around the world and back dozens of times with his own trio, but also playing and recording with some of the greatest musicians in the world such as, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Frank Wess, Benny Golson, James Moody, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, and many more. He has won the Down Beat Critics poll eleven times & the Readers poll ever year since 2002, as well as countless Jazz Journalist awards, and countless others. In 2004 Joey was nominated for a Grammy for his record "Falling In Love Again", and again in 2010 for his release titled "Never Can Say Goodbye". Currently, Joey continues to tour with his own group, and other all-star projects. His latest release "One For Rudy" is a tribute to the legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Joey has played a key role in the development of numerous modern organs & keyboards that replicate the classic Hammond organ/Leslie speaker sound. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: MACEO PARKER AT THE BLUE NOTE

Maceo Parker performs at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) Tuesday through Sunday, January 28th through February 2nd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Maceo Parker's name is synonymous with Funky Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth. Everyone knows by now that he's played with each and every leader of funk, his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as " like being at University "; jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton; stretching out with Bootsy's Rubber Band. He's the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of Funk in one golden thread. The cipher that unravels dance music down to its core. His collaborations over the years performing or recording or both have included Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. His timeless sound has garnered him a fresh young fan base. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: RACHEL ECKROTH AT THE IRIDIUM

Rachel Eckroth will perform atTHE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB(1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Tuesday & Wednesday, January 28th & 29th with shows at 8:30 & 10:30 pm. She is joined by Chris Parrello - guitar; David Cutler - bass; Rudy Royston - drums. Music writers often find themselves stumped as to quantify an artist's work, seemingly defaulting to the "eclectic trump card" way too often. As to the works of jazz pianist, singer and songwriter, Rachel Eckroth - eclectic is most apropos; however, Rachel's music is obvious - from its roots and influence, to its gracefully bold uniqueness. Born and raised in the greater Phoenix area, Rachel was rooted in a musical family • both of her parents are musicians as is her brother, Michael (pianist with John Scofield). By the time Rachel was in high school, she was a fixture in the Phoenix jazz scene under the watchful eye of former Basie Band vocalist, Dennis Rowland. Concurrently, Rachel released her first solo album, "Mind," a jazz trio record met with critical acclaim nationally. There is a $25 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

NYC: AMINA CLAUDINE MYERS TRIO AT DIZZY'S

The Amina Claudine Myers Trio with Amina Claudine Myers, Hammond organ, vocals, piano; Jerome Harris, bass, performs at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday, January 29th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Genre-defying pianist, singer, and composer Amina Claudine Myers resists the limitations of genre labels, carrying on the Ellingtonian assertion of "We are beyond category." Myers incorporates African and European classical influences - both integral throughout the development of jazz - as well as blues, gospel, and what many listeners have called "avant-garde," into new and extended forms. Though she shares many elements common in the larger jazz world, her music both isolates and combines these individual pieces in a way that makes the sum unique, refreshing, and varied. With an air more comically self-aware than evasive, she most accurately classifies her music as, simply, "music." There is a $30 cover.
