NY STATE: PIANO BAR WITH BOBBY BELFRY AT THE BEAR MOUNTAIN INN
Each Thursday night beginning at 8:00 pm, THE BLUE ROOF TAPAS BAR at THE BEAR MOUNTAIN INN(55 Hessian Drive, Bear Mountain, NY - 845-786-2731) will host a rollicking night of great music from Sinatra to GaGa and just about every musical genre in between on Thursdays, with award winning recording artist and songwriter Bobby Belfry as singer & host and the brilliant all-around musician and singer David Budway at the piano, as well as the magnificent Sarah Mucho on vocals (this lady can croon and rock then tear it all up and start over again! If you don't know what that means-there's only one way to find out!) The mic is OPEN! So if you sing, bring sheet music and sing a tune. AND if you don't sing, sing along anyway! BOSTON: DONNY McCASLIN QUARTET AT THE REGATTABAR
Donny McCaslin Quartet featuring Tim Lefebvre, bass; Jason Lindner, piano; Mark Guiliana, drums, performs at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel(1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757 - ) on Thursday, January 30th at 7:30 pm. Donny McCaslin has long been one of the music's most striking voices, with long-running collaborations that include innovators like Dave Douglas, Dave Binney, Gary Burton, and Maria Schneider. McCaslin's performance on Maria Schneider's 2004 album Concert In The Garden received a Grammy nomination for "Best Jazz Instrumental Solo." His own solo work has been marked by a restless exploration that is only accelerated with his latest release, Casting for Gravity (Greenleaf Music, 2012). Here, McCaslin's gargantuan tenor sound finds an ideal setting to rampage through in the ferocious grooves and electronic textures of keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Tim Lefebvre, and drummer Mark Guiliana. Couching his trademark gift for brawny melodies in lurching dub rhythms, swirling electronica- inspired atmospheres, and arena-rock power, McCaslin has crafted a game-changer of an album, fusing a wealth of forward-looking influences into one wholly new modern jazz sound. Bill OConnell is a native New Yorker who has played with many of the greats in the worlds of jazz and latin-jazz. Dinner/Show: $65 Show only: $25.
TORONTO: MIKE FRANCIS QUARTET
The Mike Francis Quartet (Mike Francis - guitar and vocals; Robi Botos - piano; Brian Barlow - drums; Neal Davis - bass) performs at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299 - ) on Thursday through Saturday, January 30th through February 1st at 9:00 pm. Francis is a studio guitarist, writer, and record producer with over 30 years experience in the Toronto recording scene. The first several years of his professional career was spent playing the regular club circuit before Mike discovered his ability to perform well under the pressure that is the recording studio. He has performed on thousands of tv and radio jingles , numerous tv shows, feature films, and recording projects for a variety of artists and producers. There is a $15 cover.
TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: SAM POMANTI
Sam Pomanti will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299 - ) as part of the clubs Young Artist Series on Thursday, January 30th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Sam Pomanti is an 18 year-old keyboardist and singer in Toronto. Born into a musical family, Sam grew up listening to the music of Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Tower of Power and Joni Mitchell, among others, that would often be playing in the house. Taking up the piano when he was 11, Sam started learning the songs he would hear his father (Lou Pomanti) playing. Time passed, and Sam got further into music, starting several bands throughout high school and playing at various locations in Ontario. Now at Humber College for music, Pomanti is taking advantage of the abundance of great musicians found there. Playing around Toronto often, at venues like The Orbit Room and The Drake Underground with his pop/funk band Vibrosis, Sam is focused on bringing more music to the Toronto scene. There is no cover charge.
D.C.: COREY HARRIS AT BLUES ALLEY
Corey Harris will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Saturday, January 30th through February 1st with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Harris is a guitarist, songwriter, and performer who is leading a contemporary revival of country blues with a fresh, modern hand. He is a powerful and compelling singer and an accomplished guitarist whose musical artistry is complemented by serious explorations of the historical and cultural conditions that gave rise to the blues. He demonstrates his respect for the past and his mastery of the Mississippi Delta blues tradition by interpreting the songs of early blues luminaries in new ways, while also creating an original vision of the blues by infusing his music with a broad range of sounds and styles.
