BOSTON: THE JEFF BALLARD TRIO AT SCULLERS

The The Jeff Ballard Trio with Lionel Loueke & Miguel Zenon will celebrate the release of their new CD "Time's Tales" atSCULLERS JAZZ CLUB(400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Wednesday, June 4th at 8:00 pm. For several decades Jeff Ballard has been the first call drummer for a host of contemporary jazz's biggest names, notably pianist Brad Mehldau, with whom Ballard has played since 2005. Of late, however, Ballard has gone it alone. Ballard's trio draws liberally from influences across time and geographical space. The exotic, beguilingly fused sounds, however, are much more than the sum of the trio's diverse backgrounds, which inevitably impart African, South and North American colors to the mix. BOSTON: AVERY*SUNSHINE AT THE REGATTABAR

You can experience "the church of Avery*Sunshine" atTHE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, June 4th at 7:30 pm. With her thunderous, gospel-bred pipes and heart-to-heart content, the singer-songwriter can't help spilling the truth in her music. She knows the best route sometimes is the direct one. No detours. So listeners won't have to "get on her level." She's already on theirs. This candid philosophy fits perfectly in a social-media-driven world that's forced even the most secretive entertainers to open up. While much of it seems staged (is everyone that perfect?), Avery's always been frank - the girlfriend and single mother of two who'll offer not just real, but relevant talk. There is a $20 cover.
