NYC: JANE MONHEIT SINGS IRVING BERLIN AT BIRDLAND
The Broadway at Birdland concert series jazz vocalist Jane Monheit will be performing at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) with a concert of Irving Berlin material on Monday, June 2nd at 7:00 pm. She will be backed by an extraordinary trio, led by arranger/ bass player Mary Ann McSweeney. Teaming up for a third time with a dynamic band and vocal accompanists, gifted jazz vocalist Jane Monheit will sing an upbeat portfolio of Irving Berlin classics to new arrangements by bassist Mary Ann McSweeney. After two successful gigs performing the swinging version of Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" this is just another opportunity to delve into the amazing compositions of Irving Berlin with a twist. Monheit's stellar backup band for the evening will be Mary Ann McSweeney (bassist, arranger), Jim Ridl (pianist),and Alvester Garnett (drums). Grammy Award-nominated Jane Monheit has been a leading light in both the jazz and cabaret worlds since emerging as a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute's 1998 vocal competition. In addition to her own recordings, she has worked alongside the likes of Terence Blanchard, Tom Harrell, and Ivan Lins. Monheit is touring in support ofher album The Heart of the Matter, which she says is an especially satisfying collaboration with Grammy Award-winning producer Gil Goldstein, who has previously worked with such giants as Wayne Shorter, Gil Evans, and Pat Metheny. The pair first joined forces for part of Monheit's 2009 album The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me. Call for cover/minimum information.
NYC: JIM CARUSO'S "CAST PARTY" MONDAYS AT BIRDLANDFEATURED OPEN MIC EVENT
Every Monday night at 9:30 pm, Broadway impresario Jim Caruso hosts "Cast Party", a combination open-mic, networking event and party atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) during which the biggest stars on Broadway relax on their night off by performing their favorite songs in an informal setting. Cast Party is a mix of music, impromptu performance and cocktail party revelry, where showbiz superstars, stunning jazz talents and cabaret glitterati hit the stage alongside up-and-comers to serve up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle. It's the ultimate spot to mix and mingle with talented show folk and their fans. There is a $20 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS: ALBARE
ALBARE is the nom de guerre of Albert Dadon, and he will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday, June 2nd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. ALBARE is a virtuoso jazz guitarist with a strong melodic sense and a wealth of global influences. Born in Morocco and raised in Israel and France, Albare first worked as a musician in France, before emigrating to Australia at the age of 27. He is not only well known as a jazz musician but has maintained a highly successful career as one of Australia's most prominent musician entrepreneurs. He is undoubtedly a major force in Australian jazz, having directed the Melbourne Jazz Festival for many years and as chairman of the Australian Jazz Awards. In 2008 he received the Order of Australia for his service to the Arts and Business. He currently lives in Melbourne, Australia. There is a $10-$20 cover.
NYC: JUILLIARD SCHOOL ENSEMBLE AT DIZZY'S
Juilliard School Ensemble will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Monday, June 2nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since its founding, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy at Dizzy's. The Juilliard School Jazz Ensemble features some of the world's most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians.
