NYC: FREDDY COLE AT BIRDLAND
Freddy Cole will perform atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, June 3rd through 7th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Freddy Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat "King" Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano, sings and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the great shadow cast by his elder brother. In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother and his timing swings a little more. His vocals - suave, elegant, formidable, and articulate - are among the most respected in jazz. Cole's career continues to ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America's homegrown art form with a style and musical sophistication all his own. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS: BRAD MEHLDAU & CHRISTIAN McBRIDE
Brad Mehldau and Christian McBride will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, June 6th through 8th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The show is part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival. One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism, and pop allure. From critical acclaim as a bandleader and solo artist to major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny, Anne Sofie von Otter, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Renee Fleming, Britten Sinfonia, and Joshua Redman, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. Bassist extraodinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator, Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. Sometimes hard to believe considering this man is not yet 40. There is a $35-$55 cover.
