NYC: JAY LEONHART DUO AT BIRDLAND

The Jay Leonhart Duo will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on SaturdayMay 17thl at 6:00 pm. Combining the skills of an old school entertainer and virtuoso jazz man, bassist, vocalist and composer Jay Leonhart has been a fixture of the New York scene for over forty years. When Jay was fourteen he started playing the bass in The Pier Five Dixieland Jazz Band in Baltimore and never looked back. After studying at The Peabody Institute, Jay attended The Berklee School of Music and The Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto, before leaving school to start touring with the traveling big bands of the late 50's and early 60's. Upon moving to New York, Jay eventually began playing for many of the great jazz musicians, big bands, and singers who were to be found in New York - artists like Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Tony Bennett, Marian McPartland, and Jim Hall. Jay became a very busy studio musician in New York City, visiting every musical genre from James Taylor to Ozzy Osbourne and Queen Latifah. Between 1975 and 1995 he was named The Most Valuable Bassist in the recording industry three times by the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences. Jay has now recorded 15 solo albums. His first one-man show "The Bass Lesson" is being received warmly by critics and audiences. Jay's next show "Nukular Tulips" is in the works. There is a $30 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: JOEY DEFRANCESCO ORGAN QUARTET AT BIRDLAND

Joey DeFrancesco Organ Quartet with Special Guest George Coleman will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 ) on Tuesday through Saturday, May 13th through 17th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Joey DeFrancesco comes from a musical family. His Grandfather Joseph DeFrancesco (his name sake) was a reed man. His father "Papa" John DeFrancesco is a fine jazz organist in his own right. At the age of 4 Joey began taking a strong interest in the organ. By the time he was five, he was playing Jimmy Smith songs verbatim. As the years went on his interest and love for the organ and music grew stronger. At 10 years of age he began to play in a Band in Philadelphia, which featured legendary players Hank Mobley on Tenor Saxophone, and "Philly" Joe Jones on the Drums. At 16 he signed an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records, releasing his first record "All Of Me" at 17. This record was single handedly responsible for the great resurgence of the Hammond sound in popular music. Also in his 17th year he was called on by the great Miles Davis to join his band, and toured all over Europe. It was at that time that Joey, inspired by Miles's sound, picked up the trumpet & started playing. To this day, Joey continues to play the trumpet, very similar to the style of Miles. Joey has been around the world and back dozens of times with his own trio, but also playing and recording with some of the greatest musicians in the world such as, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Frank Wess, Benny Golson, James Moody, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, and many more. Currently, Joey continues to tour with his own group, and other all-star projects. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
