The next BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists ) open mic will take place on Wednesday, February 26th at 7:00 pm at FIRST PARISH CHURCH (35 Church Street, Watertown Square, MA). Doors open at 6:45. Accompanist will be Tom LaMark. A mini-workshop at 7:00 pm. Open mic at 7:15 pm. Singers should prepare up to two songs with music charts in the correct key. $10 cover for BACA Members, $13 for non-members.
BOSTON: DAVID SANCHEZ QUARTET AT THE REGATTABAR
The David Sanchez Quartet performs atTHE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, February 26th at 7:30 pm. Sanchez began playing percussion and drums at age 8 before migrating to tenor saxophone four years later. While a student at the prestigious La Escuela Libre de Musica in San Juan, he also took up soprano and alto saxophones as well as flute and clarinet. The bomba and plena rhythms of Puerto Rico, along with Cuban and Brazilian traditions, were among the biggest influences on Sanchez's early taste in music. Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane had the greatest impact on his playing. Sanchez has also performed and recorded with Kenny Barron, Roy Haynes, Charlie Haden, Lalo Schifrin, Tom Harrell and had the opportunity to perform with the legendary drummer Elvin Jones. Whether with Gillespie, Palmieri, Haden and his other jazz mentors, or under his own name, Sanchez has continued to tour extensively, bringing his mix of mainstream jazz with Afro-Latin influences to delighted audiences throughout the globe. There is a $25 cover.
BOSTON: PATRICIA BARBER AT SCULLERS
American jazz singer, pianist, songwriter, and bandleader Patricia Barber will perform atSCULLERS JAZZ CLUB(400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111 - ) on Wednesday, February 26th at 8:00 pm. From her early days leading a jazz trio in small Chicago nightclubs, Patricia Barber has drawn extravagant accolades. The praise came at first from local writers, impressed by her unique arrangements and coolly composed piano improvisations. As she added vocals to her repertoire, the praise poured in from national reviewers intoxicated by her recordings. And when (after years of international touring) she began to focus on her own compositions, kudos arrived from new fans, besotted by her lapidary lyrics and her often indelible imagery. Andrew Craig Productions presents Soul Nannies at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Wednesdays, with sets from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. A brand-new 9 piece band, presenting you the very best in 1960•s and '70•s, R&B, Funk and Soul featuring performers: Andrew Craig, Gavin Hope, Krystle Blue, Anthony Brancati, Bryan Humphreys, Rich Grossman, Brooksey Brooks, Andrew Stewart, and Mackie Langford. There is a $15 cover.
D.C.: ALGEBRA BLESSETT AT BLUES ALLEY
Algebra Blessett returns toBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Wednesday, February 26th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. She will perform her new song "Nobody But You", the lead single from her forthcoming sophomore LP Recovery, dropping later this year. The project will follow her 2008 debut LP Purpose and 2011?s Dessert Before Dinner mixtape. While the project has been a bit slow to rise for some fans, the slight delay makes sense when you consider Algebra's touring schedule with the cast of the Rebirth musical. Algebra's return is buoyed by this piano-laden love jam whose sweet chords and lyricism counter the heavy bass of the track produced by Shannon Sanders. Call for cover/minimum information.
MARYLAND: GOTTA SWING DANCE WITH JOSH & THE GOOD OLD STUFF
Keeping the music of the 1950's alive, Josh Christina, young piano player from Baltimore County will perform at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Wednesday, February 26th at 7:30 pm. Josh has perfected his art of playing Boogie Woogie Rock 'n' Roll piano. This four piece band features Josh on keyboards, along with Howard Brown on bass, Jimmy Wall on drums and Mark Elmore on guitar, rocking the music of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Fats Domino and many others. Drop-in beginner swing lesson with Tom and Debra 7:30-8:00 pm. There is a $20 cover.
