NYC: QUEST: DAVE LIEBMAN, RICHIE BEIRACH, RON MCCLURE & BILLY HART
Reuniting once again, the innovative jazz super-group Quest returns to BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, February 25th through March 1st with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Quest returns with all of its original members: Dave Liebman (bass), Richie Beirach (piano), Ron McClure (bass), and Billy Hart (drums). The group was formed in 1981, and stopped performing and recording in 1990, allowing each member to pursue different musical avenues. After almost fifteen years of the group's separation, Quest reemerged in 2005, with the release of "Redemption: Live in Europe", which documented highlights from two live performances in Switzerland and Paris. With this album, the group reestablished themselves as an innovative and intelligent force in jazz, composed of musicians who are able to pick up as if they never disbanded. This group continues to prove that their musical communication is as unwavering as the creativity pulsing through each player. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: BILL EVANS SOULGRASS AT THE BLUE NOTE
Saxophonist Bill Evans brings Soulgrass featuring Bill Evans, sax & vocals; Tim Carbone (of Railroad Earth), violin; Neal Evans (of Soulive), keys; Eric Krasno (of Soulive), guitar; Ryan Cavanaugh, electric banjo & vocals; Dave Anderson, electric bass & vocals; Mitch Stein, electric guitar & vocals; and Josh Dion, drums & vocals, to THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Saturday, February 27th & 28th & March 1st with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Evans first joined Miles Davis group in 1980 at the age of 22, and went on to record six records and tour the world with Davis numerous times over a four-year period. He then toured and recorded three CDs with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and later played with Herbie Hancock, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Steps Ahead and Mick Jagger, among others, garnering a few Grammy Awards along the way. The sax man has been touring almost exclusively with his own band since 1990, playing well over 100 concerts worldwide per year. He has recorded 18 solo CDs, including his latest, Dragonfly, and received two Grammy nominations for his solo releases, one for Soul Insider (2002) and the other for Soulgrass (2006). There is a $20-$35 cover.
NYC: THE MUSIC OF DEXTER GORDON: A CELEBRATION
The Dexter Gordon Legacy Ensemble With George Cables, piano and musical director; Dezron Douglas, bass; Lewis Nash, drums; Jimmy Greene, tenor saxophone; Jerry Weldon, tenor saxophone; Joe Locke, vibes; and special guest Jimmy Heath (3/2 only) present The Music of Dexter Gordon: A Celebration atDIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, February 27th & 28th and March 1st & 2nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Celebrating Dexter Gordon on what would have been his 91st birthday, the great tenor saxophonist and Academy-Award nominee is remembered and honored by a world-class ensemble under the direction of Gordon's pianist and keeper of the flame, George Cables. Members of this group have extensive experience both playing with each other and with Dexter Gordon, making them ideal candidates to honor their friend and colleague on this special occasion. Featuring Gordon's compositions and favorite tunes, this will be an unforgettable night for fans of the late Dexter Gordon, and a perfect opportunity for the uninitiated to experience this iconic music. There is a $40-$45 cover.
