NYC: THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG CENTENNIAL BAND

The Louis Armstrong Centennial Band aka David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band (also known as the Louis Armstrong Centennial Band) breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 12th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/ vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more! There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: QUEST: DAVE LIEBMAN, RICHIE BEIRACH, RON MCCLURE & BILLY HART

Reuniting once again, the innovative jazz super-group Quest returns to BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, February 25th through March 1st with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Quest returns with all of its original members: Dave Liebman (bass), Richie Beirach (piano), Ron McClure (bass), and Billy Hart (drums). The group was formed in 1981, and stopped performing and recording in 1990, allowing each member to pursue different musical avenues. After almost fifteen years of the group's separation, Quest reemerged in 2005, with the release of "Redemption: Live in Europe", which documented highlights from two live performances in Switzerland and Paris. With this album, the group reestablished themselves as an innovative and intelligent force in jazz, composed of musicians who are able to pick up as if they never disbanded. This group continues to prove that their musical communication is as unwavering as the creativity pulsing through each player. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: ROY HAYNES FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH WITH RON CARTER

Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth with Ron Carter will be presented at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday & Wednesday, February 25th & 26th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Haynes is the pulse of legendary jazz. For over 50 years Roy Haynes has influenced and innovated, shaping some of the greatest recordings in jazz while his joyous drumming with the legends of the genre altered the very fabric and direction of jazz improvisation. Louis Armstrong. Lester Young. Charlie Parker. Thelonius Monk. Sarah Vaughn. Miles Davis. John Coltrane. Dizzy Gillespie. Bud Powell. Ella Fitzgerald. Stan Getz. Chick Corea. Pat Metheny. The list goes on and on as does Roy's unflagging energy and marvelous invention. With his latest group of 20-something cohorts, Roy sends his "Hard Swing" to a timeless place. Haynes elevates the performances of his Fountain Of Youth Band matching fire stroke for fire stroke, thrill for thrill, a tremendous give and take between the generations fueled by masterful musicianship and youthful abandon. There is a $35-$45 cover.

NYC: T. OLIVER REID: DROP ME OFF IN HARLEM

Singer and Broadway star T. Oliver Reid leads what he describes as "a club hopping journey through the swanky clubs and low down joints of 1934 Harlem" at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Tuesday & Wednesday, February 25th & 26th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. He is joined by Tedd Firth, piano; Trevor Neumann, trumpet; Conrad Korsch, bass; Damien Bassman, drums. Reid will be featuring the music of Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen, Andy Razaf, and more. In this new show, Reid performs each number with the unmistakable dramatic flair of a musical theater veteran, and he also provides an overview of the clubs, musicians, and social context of the music. Funny, informative, and a consummate showman, Reid will transport you back to the heyday of iconic venues like the Cotton Club. "In 1934, on a Saturday night in New York City, if you were boozin' and jazzin', you were doing it in Harlem." 80 years later, ypu can be doing it at DIZZY'S. There is a $30 cover.
