JAZZ - CABARET SHOWS TONIGHT IN NEW YORK CITY

NYC: THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG CENTENNIAL BAND

The Louis Armstrong Centennial Band aka David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band performs at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band (also known as the Louis Armstrong Centennial Band) breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 12th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/ vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more! There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: NILSON MATTA SAMBA JAZZ ENSEMBLE AT BIRDLAND

The Nilson Matta Samba Jazz Ensemble will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Wednesday, November 13th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. 2009 Grammy nominee Nilson Matta has been a creative force in the evolution and popularity of Brazilian Jazz in the United states. It was not long after he came to New York in 1985, that he has performing and recording with Grammy-winning Kenny Barron and Joe Henderson, as well as Herbie Mann, Lee Konitz, Claudio Roditi, Paul Winter, Mark Murphy, Slide Hampton, Paquito D'Rivera, Nancy Wilson and many more. Drawing from these collaborations, and from his work with Brazilian luminaries such as Hermeto Pascoal, Jo•o Gilberto, Luisa Bonf• and Johnny Alf in Brazil, (to name a few), Matta has developed his own musical signature making him a first-call bass player of Brazilian music and jazz musicians. It's not surprising therefore, that when Yo Yo Ma sought band members for his Brazilian Project Nilson was the obvious choice for bass. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: NIGHT SONGS - A LATE NIGHT INTERLUDE WITH JANIS SIEGEL

A CD release party introducing Night Songs - A Late Night Interlude With Janis Siegel will be held at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Wednesday, November 13th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Over the past three and a half decades, the voice of Janis Siegel - a nine-time Grammy winner and a seventeen-time Grammy nominee - has been an undeniable force in The Manhattan Transfer's diverse musical catalog. Over the years, Janis has sung lead on many of the Manhattan Transfer's biggest hits, including "Operator," "Twilight Zone," "The Boy from New York City," "Mystery," "Spice of Life," "Shaker Song," "Birdland," "Ray's Rockhouse," and the 5-million selling "Chanson D'Amour." Alongside her career as a member of this 36-year musical institution, Siegel has also sustained a solo career that has spawned more than a half dozen finely-crafted solo albums, including the Grammy Nominated "At Home," along with numerous collaborative projects such as "Short Stories," a Grammy nominated duet with pianist Fred Hersch. Siegel's newest release, "Night Songs" on Palmetto Records, is a collection of smooth late-night compositions. It is her first new album in 7 years, featuring, among others, Peter Erskine, Christian McBride, and Larry Goldings. This special CD release party showcases Siegel with Grammy-nominated pianist John di Martino, veteran drummer Ben Wittman, Grammy-nominated guitarist Paul Meyers, and critically-acclaimed up and coming trumpeter Dominick Farinacci. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: LESLIE WEST AT THE IRIDIUM

Leslie West will perform atTHE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB(1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Wednesday, November 13th at 8:00 pm. West has gained fame the world over during his 30-plus year career as one of the most innovative and influential musicians in the history of rock music. He is most noted for his role as leader of the explosive hard rock trio, Mountain, which was named by VH-1 as one of the Top 100 Hard Rock Groups of all time. With Mountain, he climbed the heights of rock stardom on the strength of a unique, signature guitar sound and classic songs such as "Mississippi Queen", "Never In My Life" and "Theme From An Imaginary Western",and Nantucket Sleighride which are still staples of rock radio to this day. Leslie has earned the admiration of a long list of famous peers. During his career, he has recorded or played with a litany of rock icons including Billy Joel, Van Halen, The Who, Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix, to name just a few. In fact, Eddie Van Halen, Michael Schenker and Richie Sambora have all cited Leslie as an important influence on their own music. There is a $35 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE NIELS LAN DOKY TRIO AT DIZZY'S

The Niels Lan Doky Trio, featuring Niels Lan Doky, piano; Gary Peacock, bass; and Jeff "Tain" Watts, drums, will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday, November 13th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Danish pianist Niels Lan Doky is an eclectic musician, drawing upon influences from pop, contemporary, world, and classical sounds to craft his unique style. He has been a leader on over 37 albums, and has worked with greats such as Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Jack DeJohnette, Bob Berg, Clark Terry, and Tom Harrell. His upcoming album, Scandinavian Standards, showcases Lan Doky's trio, whose sound can be attributed to extensive musical research, blended together with melodies that are both complex and romantic. For this CD release party, the trio is sure to boast its explorative, ever-changing sound with respect to the rich jazz history that continues to inspire them. There is a $30 cover.
