NYC: JIMMY HEATH BIG BAND AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Jimmy Heath Big Band will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday through Thursday, October 28th through 31st with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Jimmy Heath has long been recognized as a brilliant instrumentalist and a magnificent composer and arranger. The middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers (bassist Percy and drummer Tootie) and the father of Mtume, he has performed with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis. Heath's career got off to an early start - in 1948 at the age of 21, he performed in the First International Jazz Festival in Paris with McGhee, sharing the stage with Coleman Hawkins, Slam Stewart, and Erroll Garner. One of his earliest big bands (1947-1948) in Philadelphia included John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Specs Wright, Cal Massey, Johnny Coles, Ray Bryant, and Nelson Boyd. Charlie Parker and Max Roach even sat in on one occasion. Renowned for his work as a Professor of Music at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, Heath maintains an extensive performance and teaching schedule and continues to conduct workshops and clinics throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: PAT MARTINO ORGAN TRIO AT THE IRIDIUM

The Pat Martino Organ Trio, featuring Pat Bianchi (organ) & Carmen Intorre, Jr. (drums) will perform at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Wednesday & Thursday, October 30th & 31st with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Born Pat Azzara in Philadelphia in 1944, Pat was first exposed to jazz through his father, Carmen "Mickey" Azzara, who sang in local clubs and briefly studied guitar with Eddie Lang. He took Pat to all the city's hot-spots to hear and meet Wes Montgomery and other musical giants. He began playing guitar when he was twelve years old. and left school in tenth grade to devote himself to music. During Visits to his music teacher Dennis Sandole, Pat often ran into another gifted student, John Coltrane, who would treat the youngster to hot chocolate as they talked about music. Today, Martino lives in Philadelphia again and continues to grow as a musician. There is a $32.50 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

NYC: TED NASH BIG BAND 'CHAKRA' - CD RELEASE

The Ted Nash Big Band will celebrate the release of their latest CD 'Chakra' at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 - ) on Thursday through Sunday, October 31st through November 3rd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Saxophonist Ted Nash is a vital part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Though steeped in tradition, Nash never hesitates to push boundaries when required. Whether playing with Wynton Marsalis or his eclectic group Odeon - featuring tuba and violin - Nash always stays true to the music. At Dizzy-s he will be joined by his own big band, which is currently celebrating the release of its new album, Chakra. Following the success of his previous big band album, Portrait in Seven Shades (Two GRAMMY Award nominations), Ted brings a new vision and creative expression to his latest recording. With Ted Nash - conductor, alto sax, alto flute; Ben Kono - alto sax, soprano sax, flute, clarinet; Charles Pillow - alto sax, clarinet, flute, piccolo; Dan Willis - tenor sax, clarinet; Anat Cohen - tenor sax, clarinet; Paul Nedzela - baritone sax, bass clarinet; Kenny Rampton - lead trumpet; Alphonso Horne - trumpet; Ron Horton - trumpet; Tim Hagans - trumpet; Alan Ferber - lead trombone; Mark Patterson - trombone; Charley Gordon - trombone; Jack Schatz - bass trombone; Christopher Ziemba - piano; Martin Wind - bass; Ulysses Owens - drums. There is a $35-$45 cover depending on date.
