THROUGH SUNDAY NYC: THE CEDAR WALTON TRIO AT BIRDLAND

NYC: THE CEDAR WALTON TRIO AT BIRDLAND
CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

The Cedar Walton Trio will perform atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) Tuesday through Saturday, March 5th through 11th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Master pianist Cedar Walton has enjoyed an up-tempo career for over fifty years. Maintaining an active touring schedule, Walton has accompanied an ever-increasing list of jazz greats while also leading his own successful groups. From his native Dallas, Texas, Walton ventured to New York and began working locally with Lou Donaldson, Gigi Gryce, Sonny Rollins and Kenny Dorham before landing his first touring job with J.J. Johnson. During a three-year association with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in the early 1960s, Walton emerged as a composer, contributing originals like "Mosaic" and "The Promised Land" to the group's recordings for the Blue Note and Riverside labels. From there, Walton embarked on a variety of projects with artists such Ron Carter, Billy Higgins, Harold Land, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller, Buster Williams and Billy Higgins, Milt Jackson, Frank Morgan, Dexter Gordon, vocalists Ernestine Anderson and Freddy Cole, and The Trumpet Summit Band. One of the most influential musicians active today, many of his original compositions such as "Bolivia," "Clockwise" and "Firm Roots" have become part of the standard Jazz repertoire. Cedar regularly receives praise from critics, fellow musicians and audiences around the world, and was inducted into the National Endowment for the Arts class of Jazz Masters in January of 2010. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
