Sue Matsuki has sent us a new "Views, Reviews & News" column - her first for 2013! I was so overjoyed to get this one - which includes several reviews and recommendations, I posted it on the website right away - photos and links to be added later! Here's a little bit of what she had to say about Billie Roe's show, currently playing at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 )
METROSTAR WINNER BILLIE ROE in 1978 NYC UNDERGROUND at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 ) - remaining shows: TONIGHT, Friday, May 17th at 7:00 pm; and Saturday, May 18th at 9:30pm. - $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum. $15 cover for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
First Impressions: She's in GREAT voice. The band is kickin'. Is Billie a rocker chick at heart? Why the hell is this show starting with ugly city noises created by the band? Oh, this is going to be SO good.
And good it was GREAT in fact! After reading her bio, the answer to my question about Billie being a rocker chick is YES! Channeling her inner Joplin on "Dead and Lovely", "Make it Rain" and "Virginia Avenue", she also had substantial jazz chops on "Altar Boy" and acting chops on pretty much everything. "Soldier's Things" was stunning. Billie is a phenomenal actress and an even more phenomenal singer - what a voice! On "I'll Take New York" she affected a "New York, New York" feel with a Liza persona/vocal quality ending in this intentional off-pitched money note with the band doing the horrible city noise thing again - WOW! Just WOW! (You draw your own conclusions on this one!)
