MANHATTAN: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, May 24th & 31st at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: KARRIN ALLYSON AT BIRDLAND

Multiple Grammy nominated singer and pianist Karrin Allyson will perform atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, May 20th through 24th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. May 2011 marked a milestone for Karrin Allyson and Concord Jazz - the release of Round Midnight, the thirteenth album in a series dating back to her 1992 debut album "I Didn't Know About You." Everyone is marveling at the range of this extraordinary musician, who moves with such ease and authority from the Great American Songbook of Gershwin and Porter to the Great American Jazz Songbook of Duke and Thelonius and Miles and Dizzy, jet-setting to Rio and Paris and swinging back home to pick up Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell and Jimmy Webb. What unites this wide world of music - brings it together and makes sense of it all - is Karrin Allyson's warmth and depth. She's not just singing a lyric, she's telling you her story. And then that becomes your story. You hear the music from the inside out. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: BENNY GOLSON QUARTET AT THE BLUE NOTE

Benny Golson Quartet will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, May 23rd through 25th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Benny Golson is a talented composer/arranger whose tenor playing has continued to evolve with time. After attending Howard University (1947-1950) he worked in Philadelphia with Bull Moose Jackson's R&B band (1951) at a time when it included one of his writing influences, Tadd Dameron on piano. Golson played with Dameron for a period in 1953, followed by stints with Lionel Hampton (1953-1954), and Johnny Hodges and Earl Bostic (1954-1956). He came to prominence while with Dizzy Gillespie's globetrotting big band (1956-1958), as much for his writing as for his tenor playing (the latter was most influenced by Don Byas and Lucky Thompson). Golson wrote such standards as "I Remember Clifford" (for the late Clifford Brown), "Killer Joe," "Stablemates," "Whisper Not," "Along Came Betty," and "Blues March" during 1956-1960. His stay with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1958-1959) was significant, and during 1959-1962 he co-led the Jazztet with Art Farmer. From that point on Golson gradually drifted away from jazz and concentrated more on working in the studios and with orchestras including spending a couple of years in Europe (1964-1966). Golson has recorded consistently rewarding albums (many for Japanese labels) since that time including a reunion with Art Farmer and Curtis Fuller in a newJazztet. Through the years he has recorded as a leader for Contemporary, Riverside, United Artists, New Jazz, Argo, Mercury, and Dreyfus among others. There is a $25-$35 cover.

NYC: STEVE WILSON AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD

Acclaimed jazz saxophonist Steve Wilson will return THE VILLAGE VANGUARD (178 Seventh Avenue South, NYC - 212-255-4037) on Tuesday through Sunday, May 20th through 25th with shows at 8:30 & 10:30 pm. On the final two days of the visit (May 24th and 25th,) he will record a long-awaited live album, featuring his core band• 'Wilsonian's Grain' with Orrin Evans, Ugonna Okegwo and Bill Stewart. The uniqueness of Wilsonian's Grain is in the repertoire of Wilson originals, tunes from each member of the band, and the off-the-beaten-path tunes they play. Their interpretations of this repertoire, from this wonderfully disparate mixture of influences that each musician brings to the stage, are performed with absolute abandon and great sense of adventure. Steve plans to play and record material he's writing for the occasion, as well as "Well You Needn't (Monk), the tone poem "Santa Catarina" (Pascoal Hermeto), "Patterns" (Joe Chambers) and "If I Were a Wind of Spring," by the young composer Migiwa Miyajima. There is a $25-$30 cover plus a 1-drink minimum.

NYC: BEN WOLFE QUINTET FEATURING NICHOLAS PAYTON

The Ben Wolfe Quartet (With Ben Wolfe, bass; Dave Kikoski, piano; Donald Edwards, drums; Stacy Dillard, tenor and soprano saxophone; and Nicholas Payton, trumpet) wil perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, May 22nd through 25th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Ben Wolfe is a seasoned bassist-composer who has won critical praise for his eclectic work, which has ranged from a 25-minute suite for double quartet, to a short film soundtrack. Including his recent MAXJAZZ release "From Here I See," Wolfe has released seven CDs comprised solely of his original music. Early in his career, Wolfe formed a duo with Harry Connick, Jr., working together on numerous albums and world tours. He was then a part of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Diana Krall's touring band (he can be heard on her GRAMMY(r) Award-winning When I Look In Your Eyes), and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Wolfe will be joined at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola by a special guest: GRAMMY(r) Award-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton. There is a $35-$45 cover.

BOSTON: TUCK & PATTI AT SCULLERS

Tuck & Patti (Tuck Andress, guitar & Patti Cathcart, vocals) will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Friday, May 23rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Onstage and off, guitarist Tuck Andress and vocalist and arranger Patti Cathcart might, at first impression, strike you as an odd couple. Cathcart exudes the soft, centered yet powerful graciousness of a gospel singer; Andress almost wears his brain on his skin, anticipating the thousands of musical decisions he'll have to send to his ten fingers during the course of a performance. And yet, with over 30 years of performing together and almost as many years of marriage, the devotion forged by this extraordinary couple shows no sign of dimming from the pressure of familiarity. Andress and Cathcart first met in the Bay Area in 1978. They knew almost instantly they that found lifetime musical partners in each other, so they formed a duo, guitarist and vocalist. Friendship and collaboration grew to love, and the two were married in 1981. Their recording career took off when Windham Hill Jazz signed them for 1988's groundbreaking Tears of Joy. This and several other Windham Hill albums put them on the map, and they've been solidifying their career, their musical conversation, their technique, and their love together ever since. They now have their own recording studio, as well as their own label, T&P Records, which licenses their CDs to major labels for distribution around the world. They tour Asia and Europe often, and they enjoy taking occasional time off from touring to teach at their Bay Area home, as well as doing workshops while on tour. Dinner/Show: $75 Show only: $35.

NYC: THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND

After sold out runs in 2009 & 2010, Thank You For Being A Friend returns to THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) for its third limited-run engagement. Performances are Fridays, May 9th & 23rd at 10:00 pm and May 16th & & 30th at 7:00 pm. This unauthorized musical parody inspired by the beloved TV sitcom "The Golden Girls," features book by Nick Brennan, music by Jeff Thomson, and lyrics by Luke Jones and Cisco Cardenas. In the show four women over 60 (Blanchette, the varicose-veined vixen; Dorthea, the brainy ball-buster; Roz, the lovable airhead; and Sophie, the wisecracking spitfire) are spending their golden years together in a wicker-filled bungalow in Miami. But when gay pop superstar Ricky Martin moves next door, his loud outdoor sex parties keep the quartet of cheesecake-loving retirees awake. The solution pits the gays against the girls at the annual Shady Oaks Retirement Home Talent Show: if the women win, then no more sex parties; if the gays garner top prize, the sassy seniors must serve as the party's clean-up crew. Singing, dancing and hilarity ensues! This newly revised production will feature original cast members Chad Ryan, Luke Jones, and Nick Brennan with newcomer John De Los Santos. The production team features Jonathan Pennington (Director), Cisco Cardanez (Assistant Director/Stage Manager), John De Los Santos (Choreographer), Luke Jones and Nick Brennan (Set Design), Timothy Hart (Lighting), Jessa-Raye Court (Costumes) and Doug Repetti (Sound). There is a $20 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum. Reservations athttps://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/929670
