NEXT SATURDAY AT 54 BELOW: NYC: HELL OR HIGH WATER WITH JAMES JACKSON, JR.

NYC: HELL OR HIGH WATER WITH JAMES JACKSON, JR.
CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

Performing artist James Jackson Jr., presents an evening of gender-defying songs, ramblings from the pages of his diary, and an evening like no other at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Saturday, March 16th at 11:00 pm. His razor-sharp wit, talent and on & off stage persona have made him an artistic force to be reckoned with. Elliot Roth leads the band featuring some of the hottest musicians in town. Shaleah Adkisson and LaDonna Burns on back-up vocals. Directed by MAC and Bistro Award winner Gerry Geddes. A self-described "sucker" for song interpretation and storytelling, James' unique sense of humor is now aimed at changing the face of the cabaret stage. James Jackson, Jr. was undergraduately reared by lesbians in the New England Bekshires after artistically growing up in Boston under the soul-food tutelage of a deep southern family. After being deposited in New York City over a decade ago, the real work began. Dance belts, regional stage yelts, demanding Brits, and a rather unfortunate stop in Branson, Missouri lead to his discovery of artistic truth on prestigious stages like Radio City Music Hall as well as Carnegie Hall. His highly emotional, devastatingly funny cabaret act has been seen at Joe's Pub, Duane Park, DROM, The A.R.T.'s Club Oberon, and Los Angeles' Lyric Theatre. James' razor-sharp wit, unique sense of humor, talent, and on & off stage persona have become an artistic force to be reckoned with as well as a voice people want to hear as he changes the face of the concert stage. There is a $15-$25 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

Magic men are said to be drawn to the desert sands. Sometimes they come as sculptors like Christo that put up strange and beautiful environments that inspire. Sometimes they come as Native American medicine men or old Japanese Kyoto masters to meditate and postulate. And sometimes, just plain and simple great artists disguised as guitar players. Liebert's new release "Dune" sits firmly in the crosshairs of it all. Random beauty - airy, rhythmic and sometimes funky; sounds to put you inside of full and empty spaces, at the same time. Ottmar is always exceptionally brilliant and mysterious. There is a $45 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

Her love of and background in musical theater (she starred in the New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and European productions of "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris," on Broadway in "Seesaw," and in "Sweeney Todd," "A Little Night Music" and "Mame") compelled her to create a musical based on her songs. Now, hear them as never before, as well as little-known gems from her vast catalogue. Performers include, in alphabetical order: Karen Akers, Stacey Logan, Raissa Katona Bennett, Rosemary Loar, Erin Wegner Brooks, Kelly McDonald, Stephanie D'Abruzzo, Tanya Moberly, Juliana Davis, Carolyn Montgomery-Forant, Shana Farr, Marieann Meringolo, Terese Genecco, Marissa Mulder, Jillian Gottlieb, Christine Reisner, LaTanya Hall, Danielle Erin Rhodes, Elise Holman, Sarah Rice, Leah Jennings, Marta Sanders, Eva Kantor, Jennifer Sheehan, Valerie Lemon, Sonja Stuart, Adriane Lenox, KT Sullivan, Lorinda Lisitza, and Melanie Vaughan. Amanda McBroom has been called "the greatest cabaret performer of her generation, an urban poet who writes like an angel and has a voice to match." Her name first came to the attention of the music public when Bette Midler's version of Amanda's song "The Rose" hit number one all over the world. But it was Amanda's performance of her own songs on the Golden Globes, the Grammy awards, and the Tonight Show that launched her career as a singer as well as a songwriter. Her songs have been recorded by the likes of Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Judy Collins, Barbara Cook, Harry Belafonte, Betty Buckley, The Manhattan Transfer, and Donny Osmond. "Heartbeats" made its debut in Los Angeles and the play has enjoyed over 15 regional theater productions around the U.S. There is a $20 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

L.A.: BAILEY & BROURMAN RELEASE NEW CD AT THE GARDENIA

L.A.: BAILEY & BROURMAN RELEASE NEW CD AT THE GARDENIA
CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

Wendy Lane Bailey and Michele Brourman will be celebrating the release of their CD Breathing in the place where it all started, THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on March 7th at 9:00 pm. In love with music & lyrics, Wendy Lane Bailey has a powerful classic pop voice (think Ronstadt crossed with Adele with a bit of Patsy Cline thrown in for good measure), and a rather cavalier attitude towards the idea of "genre". Fusing elements of pop, jazz, country, folk, and musical theatre into a sound that is lush and romantic yet thoroughly contemporary, she makes the old sound new, and the new sound timeless. She firmly believes that a great song never really goes out of style, but can be reinterpreted to reflect changing times. Michele Brourman's songs have been featured in movies and television and the children's series "The Land Before Time" for which Brourman co-wrote and produced all the songs. As a pianist/musical director, Michele has worked with wonderful artists, including Dixie Carter, Bernadette Peters, George Ball, Lesley Ann Warren, Annie Potts and more, and played piano in Bob Dylan's band. She is best known for her song "My Favorite Year" which has become a standard in the world of cabaret. Call for cover/minimum information.
