CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH
CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH
Performing artist James Jackson Jr., presents an evening of gender-defying songs, ramblings from the pages of his diary, and an evening like no other at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Saturday, March 16th at 11:00 pm. His razor-sharp wit, talent and on & off stage persona have made him an artistic force to be reckoned with. Elliot Roth leads the band featuring some of the hottest musicians in town. Shaleah Adkisson and LaDonna Burns on back-up vocals. Directed by MAC and Bistro Award winner Gerry Geddes. A self-described "sucker" for song interpretation and storytelling, James' unique sense of humor is now aimed at changing the face of the cabaret stage. James Jackson, Jr. was undergraduately reared by lesbians in the New England Bekshires after artistically growing up in Boston under the soul-food tutelage of a deep southern family. After being deposited in New York City over a decade ago, the real work began. Dance belts, regional stage yelts, demanding Brits, and a rather unfortunate stop in Branson, Missouri lead to his discovery of artistic truth on prestigious stages like Radio City Music Hall as well as Carnegie Hall. His highly emotional, devastatingly funny cabaret act has been seen at Joe's Pub, Duane Park, DROM, The A.R.T.'s Club Oberon, and Los Angeles' Lyric Theatre. James' razor-sharp wit, unique sense of humor, talent, and on & off stage persona have become an artistic force to be reckoned with as well as a voice people want to hear as he changes the face of the concert stage. There is a $15-$25 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH
Starring master of ceremonies Bastard Keith and burlesque headliner Madame Rosebud, and featuring a rotating constellation of guest stars, THE SOPHISTICATES play at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) at 11:30 pm on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. Specializing in classic burlesque, "The Sophisticates," is a retroglam ride into a thrilling nightclub reality that nods to the past while winking to the present. Each night features a new line-up of four highly distinguished striptease artists performing two numbers each throughout the evening. Keeping the festivities inching along at an appropriately brisk pace is Bastard Keith, a showman with a soft spot for tradition combined with a yen for brainy post modern conceptual humor. Madame Rosebud has performed coast to coast and overseas with stops at the London Burlesque Festival, the New York Burlesque Festival, and competing at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum. (over 21 please)

Mary Foster Conklin returns to the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) with her acclaimed show LIFE IS A BITCH on Fridays, March 1st & 8th at 7:00 pm. She is joined by John diMartino on piano, with Greg Ryan on bass and special vocal guest John diPinto. The show is a collection of songs by Fran Landesman, the self-proclaimed "poet laureate of lovers and losers," best remembered as the lyricist of The Nervous Set, the world's first (and only) beatnik musical, which premiered in St. Louis in 1959 and later flopped on Broadway. Two numbers from the show, "All the Sad Young Men" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" were widely recorded and became jazz standards. The evening will consist of a musical assortment of Landesman collaborators, including Tommy Wolf, Alec Wilder, Bob Dorough, Roy Kral, Simon Wallace and John Simon, with a special nod to past singers who were champions of Fran's songs, like Jackie and Roy and Suzannah McCorkle. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH
LIVE AT THE RRAZZ (1000 Van Ness Avenue, SF - 800-380-3095 - ) presents Ottmar Libert with an evening of solo guitar Thursday through Sunday, March 7th through 10th to celebrate his latest CD "Dune." Showtimes are 8:00 pm on Thursday, 9:00 pm on Friday, and 7:00 pm on Saturday & Sunday, with an additional performances on Saturday at 9:00 pm. Liebert - the six-time Grammy nominated guitarist and composer - is considered to be one of the most talented, creative and influential guitarists of all time. His legendary debut release, the double-platinum Nouveau Flamenco is the biggest selling guitar album in history. Liebert has released over 20 albums and received more than 30 gold and platinum awards. There is a change in the weather and sound for Ottmar Liebert's release entitled "Dune." Magic men are said to be drawn to the desert sands. Sometimes they come as sculptors like Christo that put up strange and beautiful environments that inspire. Sometimes they come as Native American medicine men or old Japanese Kyoto masters to meditate and postulate. And sometimes, just plain and simple great artists disguised as guitar players. Liebert's new release "Dune" sits firmly in the crosshairs of it all. Random beauty - airy, rhythmic and sometimes funky; sounds to put you inside of full and empty spaces, at the same time. Ottmar is always exceptionally brilliant and mysterious. There is a $45 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
