SAD NEWS: Paulette Attie, Singer, Actress, Author

Paulette Attie, singer, actress, songwriter, and author whose performing career spanned more than five decades, died Wednesday, Jan. 21 at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York following an illness.

Her versatile talent and her optimistic way of looking at life adapted well to her various appearances on the legit stage, in cabaret rooms and concert halls, on television in daytime dramas and made-for-TV movies, on film, on radio as a talk show host, and in commercials and on voiceovers.

She appeared in a number of roles Off Broadway including her one-woman show which she also wrote, About Time. She performed and had leading roles in many musicals (Gypsy, Guys and Dolls, Can-Can), operas and operettas (The Bald Soprano, The Old Maid and the Thief, The Merry Widow, and La Vie Parisienne), and plays (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Perfect Party) in New York and in regional houses.

Ms. Attie performed in NY cabaret rooms, and in concerts at Carnegie Hall, the Bruno Walter Auditorium, Lincoln Center Outdoors, and the Hollywood Bowl. She produced and performed in a series of yearly concerts at New York’s Lamb’s Theatre and was the inaugural performer at the NY and Riverbank State Parks.

Her TV appearances included roles on Love of Life, One Life to Live, All My Children, and General Hospital. On WNYC radio, she hosted Paulette Attie’s Musical Playbill with weekly guests. In 1979, Paulette founded the National Musical Theatre. She conceived and wrote Encore, a musical theatre revue, produced by NMT, which toured the U.S.

Ms. Attie graduated UCLA cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She was the recipient of a National Poetry Award in 1998, five ASCAPlus Awards for songwriting, from 2000 to 2004. She was the first woman performer elected into the Friars Club in 1988. Her book, The Seven Keys to Live a Masterful Life, which incorporates her life philosophy, is about to be published.

She is survived by a brother, Maurice Attie of Los Angeles, Calif., a sister, Ariana Attie Frue of Tustin, Calif., and a nephew Sebastian Attie, also of Los Angeles.

A memorial service is being held on Friday, January 23rd at 6:00 pm at the Nicholas Roerich Museum, 319 West 107th Street, NYC.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that a tax-deductible donation be sent to CPC - Center for Peace through Culture, an organization that Ms. Attie was involved with over the years. Checks should be made out to and mailed to Laraine Lippe, 302 E. 88th St., #4G, New York, NY 10128.

WE LIVE IN AMAZING TIMES!

When I was a teen I worked in the family office in NYC as a messenger/delivery boy during the summer. And when a message had to be sent as quickly as possible to a customer or a salesman or one of our principals in Europe, there was this little gadget on the wall - sort of like an oven timer. You turned the dial and as the internal spring brought it back it made a clicking-clanking sound. It sent a special code by wire to the nearest WESTERN UNION office and a few minutes later someone would arrive to pick up the telegram or cablegram to take it back to be transmitted.

A few minutes ago - seated at my desk - I received an order for an ad for the website from a lady in Australia. I quoted her the price and asked what website to make the link to. She immediately contacted by e-mail her webmaster - in Denmark. Within 15 minutes all was settled - and I even received a PayPal payment! Around the world and back in minutes. Most amazing.

The new ad goes up on Monday. It was our first ad from someone in Australia - I gave her a special discount.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO TEST A NEW CABARET PROMOTION IDEA

I have another new idea (these "brainstorms" come to me when I stay home from cabaret for too many nights because of the frigid weather) and I need your help - if you are interested. I have a SKYPE account - I call it my business phone - which allows me to make phone calls without using my cell phone - and receive phone messages as well. I have no "real" phone. And if you have a SKYPE account (its free to sign up at http://www.skype.com/) you can call my phone at any time from anywhere at a very low - or no cost - and leave a message. OK, I could answer it but I don't - leave a message. My SKYPE account address is stuhamstra if you have a SKYPE account - that's easy to remember. If you don't have a SKYPE ACCOUNT you can call my SKYPE phone number at 646-652-6743. I won't answer, but a lady with a British accent will answer and ask you to leave a message. And for this test I would like you to leave a message about your upcoming cabaret show or cabaret CD release.

Introduce yourself by name an city, and then leave a short 2 minute promo (please remember to give all the details, and give the URL of your website if possible). It would also help to leave your e-mail address so I can contact you. This is just a test, and maybe absolutely nothing will ever come if it and your recording will be lost forever. But it might just end up as part of that long promised but never delivered CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE podcast I have been talking about for about three years. I need your help to test my software and see if any upgrades are needed before we launch it officially - and I might even send your a special URL where you can tune in on the internet to some of our test efforts.

Now comes some legal mumbo-jumbo: If you leave a message promoting your event or CD, you thereby grant to Stuart V. Hamstra dba CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, its subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, successors, and assigns the right and permission to record, use, publish, stream live, offer for sale, or otherwise distribute any audio or video interview. Such right and permission includes, but is not limited to, name, recorded voice or video, photograph or likeness, biographical information, handouts or any material based upon or derived therefrom.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW TO MARCH EVENT - 20% ALREADY SOLD IN LESS THAN A WEEK!!

We have already sold 16 tickets out of 80 available to our 2nd ANNUAL MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on March 10th at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 ). You can purchase your tickets at http://www.cabarethotlineonline/thankyou1tkt2.shtml.

Where else could you catch performances of Kristy Cates (Broadway's Elphaba and part of original WICKED cast), multi-award winner Natalie Douglas, Anne Steele (who won the Metropolitan Room's Metrostar Contest), Joan Curto (from Chicago), and mega-cabaret-stars like Anna Bergman, Sally Mayes and Jack Donahue for just $20 (members) or $30 (non-members). And I got a note from someone really special who will be in NYC from out of town for that week and might be persuaded to pop in as a special guest star. Stay tuned - but get those ticket orders in.

SOME "MUST SEE CABARET" FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS

Here are a few MUST SEE suggestions for the next few "cabaret days". Details on all these events can be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.

First off, if you are in the Boston/New England area, there is a show this Saturday, January 24th at 8:00 pm at THE BLACKSMITH HOUSE called a "Winter Festival Showcase" - a fundraising event for BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists). Featured Performers are singer/actress/educator Celia Slattery, David Thorne Scott and Mark Shilansky. It's a good cause, and I am told it promises to be a great show. Wish I could be there.

Next, another reminder of the best awards show in town - the N.Y. NIGHTLIFE AWARDS on Monday, January 24th at 7:00 pm at THE TOWN HALL. No acceptance speeches - the top choices by the NYC entertainment press in the areas of cabaret, comedy and jazz will perform (including Karen Akers) instead to demonstrate why there were chosen. Good seats are still available.

Tonight there is a great show at DON'T TELL MAMA at 6:30 pm - Grace Cosgrove's GRACE NOTES - a singers' soiree. What is so fantastic about these monthly events is the fact that both audience and performer take home with them something special. The audience gets to see some of the top performers in cabaret (plus a newcomer or two) and the performer gets to try out new material for their upcoming shows before a "live audience." Several performers have mentioned to me how much being part of this show has helped them formulate their upcoming shows - testing new arrangements, and medleys in advance to see if they work. I'm going to try to be there as week - a great "sampler" for press folks as well.

Suzanne Carrico brings back her fantastic "The Friendliest Thing" show to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on Friday and Saturday nights - I am going to try to make it to one of the performances (so much cabaret my calendar is jam filled with "must sees" and many I just won't be able to make). I saw the show last year, and it is a winner in all departments.

Saturday night Tom D'Angora turns 30 and brings back his hit, award winning and wildly funny "Divas I've Done" show for one night only to THE LAURIE BEECHMAN. If you missed this show when it played 10 years ago (first a DON'T TELL MAMA and then "all over the world") be sure to catch it this time around. You might have to wait another 10 years.

Hey, if I was in Los Angeles I would be checking out Julie Wilson's new show this weekend (and next) at THE GARDENIA. In Chicago I would try to make it to piano bar on Friday or Saturday with Daryl Nitz and Beckie Menzie at DAVENPORT'S, and in San Francisco I would head to the "wine country" to catch Wesla Whitfield and Mike Greensill at SILO'S in Napa.

The shows are all there - including Steve Ross at THE OAK ROOM, Marianne Challis at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN, "Menage" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, Marilyn Maye at THE ROYAL ROOM in Florida, Mark Murphy at THE IRIDIUM, Cait Doyle at THE DUPLEX - you have read about them all in the newsletters over the past few weeks and they are all listed in the DIARY/DATEBOOK on the website. Now its up to you to be there - at one or more - in the audience! Now - more than ever - cabaret needs your support.

Details on all these events can be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.

CAMERA RETURNS FROM SOUTH AMERICAN VACATION

My camera has returned from South America - it travels more than I do, lately. I had loaned the camera to my friend Daniel so he could take some photos at a Christmas party he was going to at the apartment of some good friends. They were leaving for Ecuador a few days later for family event for a few weeks and begged him to let them take it along, so he phoned me and I agreed. It arrived back over the weekend loaded to the limit so I downloaded the photos and put them on a CD for them. I could see from the photos why Daniel keeps telling me that when I retire I should move to Ecuador - especially when I look out my window at the snow-covered streets and thing about the deep-freeze we just went through. Now I must research to see if there is any cabaret there (and try to learn Spanish).

DID YOU MISS YOUR ISSUE OF CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE TODAY?

It seems that over 60 newsletters were returned today because the contents were considered "inappropriate or spam" by various spam filters. Now, I assume that everyone who has subscribed really wants to receive every issue, and they should check their spam filters to make sure that mail from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be let through - you need to add the e-mail address to your filter's "white list". Of course if you are using a computer hooked up to the server of a company you work for, you may not be able to do this.

I would love to resend you today's issue, but I have no idea why this one was rejected. Last time this happened, the name of a long closed club in Manhattan called BOBO'S was miss-corrected by my spell checker to BOOBS - I didn't catch it and over 60 newsletters were rejected. In today's issue the only "offensive" word I could find would be "gay" but that word has so many different uses I kind of doubt it would be rejected unless you are using a computer at a Southern Baptist or possibly Morman church.

So - today's issue has now been posted on the website - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ - and there are 2 links right on the home page - one near the top and one in the left column.

And if you can help me find the offending word I would be most appreciative - so I can avoid it in the future.

HUGS
