TODAY IN L.A.: JAN ABRAMS COMES TO ARTHUR NEWMAN THEATRE

TODAY IN L.A.: JAN ABRAMS COMES TO ARTHUR NEWMAN THEATRE

Bronx-born Jan Abrams will make her desert return on Saturday, September 25th at 7:00 pm at the ARTHUR NEWMAN THEATRE at the JOSLYN CENTER THEATRE (73-750 Catalina Way, Palm Desert, CA - 760-340-3220). Her current show is autobiographical and entitled "On My Way To You", which is taken from her CD "Rainbow Wings". Accompanying Jan on the piano is musical director John Randall. Jan's singing talent was influenced by her father and two uncles who were all piano tuners with an exceptional pitch and an affinity for the Great American Songbook. One of her uncles, Victor Abrams, was a songwriter whose songs were recorded by Dinah Washington, Dean Martin, Sarah Vaughn, and Nat King Cole. Listening to the three sing in beautiful three part harmonies propelled Jan into wanting to become a singer at an early age, seeing every Broadway show and learning every song from their scores. After moving to Manhattan, Jan began singing in clubs such as Scene One, The Duplex, The Grand Finale, Freddy's Supper Club, Panache, Don't Tell Mama, and Eighty-Eight's, felling in love with the intimacy of the cabaret art form. In 1998, Jan moved to Los Angeles and married but continued to perform cabaret at The Cinegrill at The Roosevelt Hotel, and at The Gardenia. Tickets are $10.

TODAY IN AUS: EMMA FORD IN LILA GRAY AT THE BUTTERFLY (Melbourne Fringe Event)

TODAY IN AUS: EMMA FORD IN LILA GRAY AT THE BUTTERFLY
(Melbourne Fringe Event)

Emma Ford tells the story of LILA GRAY in her show at THE BUTTERFLY CLUB (204 Bank Street, South Melbourne, VIC - 03 96902000 - ) Thursday through Sunday, September 23rd through 26th at 9:00 pm (8:00 pm on Sunday). Lila Gray is an old soul. Literally. But she's not particularly wise. Approaching her existence with a deluded nonchalance, Lila waltzes through a series of darkly humorous events, leaving a bizarre trail of destruction in her wake. Fickle, obsessive and impulsive to a ridiculous degree, will she ever learn from her mistakes? A unique, comical look at the migration of the soul, 'Lila Gray' poses the universal question: 'so... what happens next?!' Tickets are $22.

FIRST ANNUAL "AUTUMN IS CABARET SEASON" CAMPAIGN HAS BEGUN

Our first annual AUTUMN IS CABARET SEASON campaign has begun! For the next 3 1/2 months we urge all cabaret performers and fans to help us promote the art and artists of cabaret - now more than ever, cabaret needs your support!

I have been truly touched by the number of folks who, when asked to join as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (even at the $5 sustaining level) write that they simply cannot join at this time. There are stories of eviction notices, lost jobs, cutback in hours, spouses laid off of work, and for some professional performers a shortage of bookings that began over a year ago or, for others, the inability to attract audiences for their shows.

There is little you or I can do to reduce general unemployment (which still remains at nearly 10% - even more in some areas) but we can - and we must - do something to revitalize cabaret, by spreading the word about this amazing, exciting, creative and thrilling form of entertainment.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be giving you suggestions and ideas on how everyone who receives these free CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters can do their part - many of which will cost nothing! If you're not yet subscribed, just send an e-mail to stuhamstra@svhamstra.com with the single word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line (it's automatic - its free).

First off, spread the slogan AUTUMN IS CABARET SEASON (hard to spell, I realize - misspelled it several times myself). A quick and easy way is to add the phrase to your signature line on your e-mails. That way, everyone who receives an e-mail from you will see the slogan - and when they ask what it means, you have a perfect opportunity to spread the "gospel" of cabaret!

Next, add the phrase (or the orange banner from my website -http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) to your website, your blog and your MySpace and/or FaceBook pages. You can leave it unlinked or link it anywhere you please!

Remember, this campaign is not about CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - its about the ART OF CABARET. Together it is our way to get the word out that a whole world of exciting, up-close & personal entertainment awaits. It's our way to begin to re-fill those cabaret rooms, get bookings for our favorite performers, and make everyone "cabaret conscious".

This is not a fund raising campaign! It's an awareness campaign. But it will work only if as many folks as possible take part. I've already started by posting the slogan several times a day on the 4 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE TWITTER accounts, and on my FaceBook account, as well as on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE blog .

Please start today - we don't have a moment to lose! To take part in the suggestions above will cost you nothing, but may mean a booking for a performer, or more seats sold at a cabaret event somewhere.

Spread the word - AUTUMN IS CABARET SEASON!

BULLETIN: SUE MATSUKI TO JOIN THE STAFF OF CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

SUE MATSUKI TO JOIN THE STAFF OF CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is proud to announce that Cabaret's "Godmother", Sue Matsuki, is coming on staff as a writer as of October 1st. As someone who sees almost as many shows a week as I do, Sue will be doing show reviews and other special write ups for the newsletter and the website. She will also be looking for new talent to recommend to our subscribers and web visitors. Historically, Sue has written personal write ups on shows that she has seen over the years and I have noticed that many folks have actually used those quotes in their press releases. Sue always attends a show first as a lover of talent and secondly as a singer. Please watch for her first posting in the Monday, October 4th issue where Sue will layout her Mission Statement and how the column will work. We will be setting a contact page up for her where you can contact her with information for your shows. More about this in Thursday's issue.
