BOSTON: BETTYE LAVETTE AT THE REGATTABAR

Bettye LaVette performs at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Saturday, February 28th at 8:00 pm. She was born Betty Jo Haskins in 1946, in Muskegon, Michigan. The family moved to Detroit when she was six years old. Her parents sold corn liquor and her living room was oft-times visited by The Soul Stirrers, The Blind Boys of Mississippi, and many other traveling gospel groups of the day. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Bettye did not get her start in the church, but in that very same living room, where there was a jukebox, filled with the blues, country & western, and R&B records of the time. The "5" Royales, Dinah Washington, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Red Foley, ... these were her roots. By 16, Betty Jo had become enamored with showbiz. She decided to change her name to something more dramatic. She knew a local groupie by the name of Sherma Lavett, liked the sound of the name, and thus, Betty LaVette was born. Singer Timmy Shaw brought her to Johnnie Mae Matthews, notorious Motor City record producer. Bettye's first single was "My Man - He's a Loving Man.", in the fall of 1962. The record was quickly picked up by Atlantic for national distribution. The record charted #7 R&B and put her on her first national tour, with Ben E. King, Clyde McPhatter, and another newcomer, Otis Redding. After a brief spell at Detroit's Lupine label, Bettye went back to New York and became the featured singer in the Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford Review, where their Small's Paradise shows became the talk of the town. Her association with Don and Dee Dee spawned her next big record, for the Calla label. "Let Me Down Easy", written by Dee Dee Ford, was an atmospheric masterpiece. Bettye's pleading voice, set against the moody string arrangement by Dale Warren produced a record that is on many "greatest soul songs of all time" lists. It went # 20 R&B in 1965 and led to an appearance on the television show, Shindig. It also put her on a tour with The James Brown Revue. She has appeared on National Public Radio's World Cafe, All Things Considered, Weekend Edition, Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me, and performed a Tiny Desk Concert. She has appeared in a Mississippi Public Broadcasting series, Blues Divas, and is in a film of the same name, both produced by award winning film maker, Robert Mugge. She has also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, The Conan O'Brien Show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Lopez Tonight, Austin City Limits, The Prairie Home Companion, The Artist's Den, Good Morning America, The Today Show and The Tavis Smiley Show. One of the few multi-instrumentalists who sounds virtuosic on each chosen instrument, Don Thompson has made significant musical contributions on vibes, bass, and piano. His uncanny ability to move flawlessly from instrument to instrument has made him a valued sideman on the Toronto, and international, jazz scene. Thompson was born in Powell River, British Columbia, in 1940. By 1960, he had begun working steadily as a freelance musician, at this point, mainly on bass. In 1965, Thompson joined the now legendary John Handy Quintet and moved to San Francisco. During his tenure with the Handy band, Thompson appeared on several recordings, most notably the infamous John Handy Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival. He returned to Toronto in 1967, and since 1969 has been a resident there. In 1974, he became a member of guitarist Jim Hall's trio, primarily as a bassist. In 1982 he joined pianist George Shearing's band, a position he held for a five-year period. Since returning to Toronto, Thompson's lengthy musical collaborations have included work with, amongst others, Canadians Rob McConnell, Moe Koffman, Ed Bickert, Lenny Breau, and Sonny Greenwich. Thompson's long list of musical associations includes performances (and often recordings) with; Paul Desmond, Milt Jackson, Art Farmer, James Moody, Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Harry Edison, Frank Rosolino, Slide Hampton, Lee Konitz, Sarah Vaughan, Red Rodney, Joe Henderson, Dewey Redman, Red Mitchell, and Kenny Wheeler. NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Jimmy has also composed extended works - seven suites and two string quartets - and he premiered his first symphonic work, "Three Ears," in 1988 at Queens College (CUNY) with Maurice Peress conducting. After having just concluded eleven years as Professor of Music at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, Heath maintains an extensive performance schedule and continues to conduct workshops and clinics throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada. NYC: WREN MARIE HARRINGTON RETURNS TO THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Wren Marie Harrington returns to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Saturday, February 28th at 7:00 pm. Harrington is that relatively rare breed of musical performer, equally adept in opera, musical theatre and more recently Latin jazz/world beat. Wren was born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. Starting - as so many did - as a teenager in a church choir, she studied opera, both in college and then in postgraduate opera training in Germany, Italy and Austria. Professionally, she sang leading soprano roles throughout the US and Europe, including roles in La Boheme, Carmen, Hansel and Gretel, Der Rosenkavalier, A Chekhov Trilogy (NY premiere), as well as lighter opera and musical theatre works such as The Merry Widow, Kiss Me Kate, Showboat, The Fantastiks, No No, Nanette, and Man of La Mancha. Several years after establishing herself in New York City, Wren landed a role in the ensemble in the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera and sang as a frequent understudy for the tempestuous opera diva role, Carlotta. Here she roosted for a decade, before deciding to branch out into the musical sounds that drifted past her window from the busy street below. Cuban, Mexican and Brazilian melodies haunted her and she developed a style of singing that fused her elegant classical vocal phrasing with the infectious rhythms of Latin jazz. She soon became a frequent invited guest artist of Mexican and Italian music festivals and recorded with jazz pianist and composer Toto Torquati. In her newest recording, Light Travels, she explores the riches of popular Latin American, Brazilian, Italian and American classics from the 1930s, 40s and 50s with the subtle blending of diverse musical elements. The result is a virtual tapestry of song gems, unconfined by idiom or country. Joining her on stage is arranger/ producer/ jazz pianist Art Bailey, a wunderkind on the improvised and world scene. Mr. Bailey has skillfully fused a variety of musical genres into a well-woven tapestry which explodes with color and light. There is a $22.50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

Find out how a guy from the Albany suburbs came to be a new-breed vocalist in the 'jazz/melancholy blues/hard blues' industry and also a regular at the Metropolitan Room. With a voice that recalls B.B. King, Billy Eckstein, and George Benson, John often branches out to jazz improvisation and scat singing, weaving in thought-provoking and often funny facts about the songs. The material includes songs of jazz greats such as Sarah Vaughn and Duke Ellington; blues greats like Billy Holiday and Ruth Brown and also jazz interpretations of modern songs. John Minnock gained popularity as a singer in Boston before moving on to the New York scene. Combining great musicality and showmanship, John presents a lively evening of Jazz, Blues, Funk and R&B. With his trio, accomplished musicians from both Boston and New York, John is as at-ease with the complexities of music as he is working with the band, with the audience and everything involved in putting on a highly entertaining show. John performed weekly at Boston's Encore Lounge for two years in one of the most successful jazz gigs in the Boston area. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

With A Different Time, his first solo piano project, Medeski once again takes his sound in a completely unexpected direction - unexpected even to him.
